(Salt Lake City, Utah - Sept. 11, 2025) – Utah Tech women's soccer stumbled at Utah, 2-1, on Thursday night at Ute Field. The Trailblazers hung tough after going down 2-0, answering with a goal of their own in the 40th minute, but couldn't convert any of their chances in the second half.
The Utes (5-2-1, 0-0-0 Big 12) started the scoring off a corner kick in the 17th minute. After an initial shot was blocked by a defender, senior goalkeeper
Brianna Frey made a save on a shot by Utah graduate defender Ava Hetzel. From the save, the ball took a lucky bounce to the feet of Ute senior forward Kelly Bullock, who scored the opening goal with her right foot to give Utah an early 1-0 lead.
Utah Tech (3-3-1, 0-0-0 WAC) logged its first shot and shot on goal in the 24th minute. Redshirt sophomore forward
Lataya Brost dribbled into the box and cut past a defender before her shot toward the left post was saved by Utah senior goalkeeper Erin Gibbs.
In the 37th minute, freshman forward Abby Affleck scored on a left-footed shot to extend Utah's lead to 2-0. Freshman defender Reese Kennel assisted on the goal, sending a cross into the box to Affleck.
Senior midfielder
Kyah Le put the Trailblazers on the board in the 40th minute. On a free kick around 25 yards from goal, Le sent a blast on frame that took a bounce just in front of the left post and beat Gibbs to find the back of the net. Le's second goal of the season made it 2-1 Utah at the break.
In the 69th minute, the Trailblazers came inches away from equalizing. Utah Tech sent in a corner kick that Gibbs punched straight down. UT thought the ball crossed the goal line, but the Utes and the referee did not. After a video review, the call of no goal on the field stood.
Freshman forward
Jocelyn Wright played a header at goal but sent it just high for a goal kick in the 72nd minute. Wright got under another chance, sending a shot over the crossbar in the 78th minute.
The Trailblazer defense kept the Utes off balance in the final 45 minutes, with all five U of U shots going off target in the second half.
Utah outshot Utah Tech 12-6, with a 3-2 edge in shots on goal. The Utes committed more fouls, 14-3, and were caught offside twice as much, 4-2.
The Trailblazers return home to host Northern Arizona on Sunday, Sept. 14, at Greater Zion Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. in St. George.
