Trailblazers Open Spring Slate with Three-Match Weekend

A GLANCE AT BYU
Brigham Young opens the season on Thursday at home with a doubleheader featuring Weber State in the morning and Utah Tech in the evening. BYU tallied a record of 17-8 last season, finishing fifth in the Big 12 with a conference mark of 8-5, before ending its season in a 4-0 loss to Auburn in the NCAA Tournament first round. 

The Cougars went 7-1 at home last season with its lone loss coming against then-No. 1 Oklahoma State. In the most recent match between UT and BYU in 2022, the Cougars came out on top with a 7-0 victory in Provo.

BYU brings back four returners including Bobo Huang, the 2024 Big 12 Co-Champion of the No. 1 singles position, while adding four newcomers. In addition to two freshmen, the Cougars added a pair of Division I transfers in Chelsea Bluestein (Iowa) and Grace Levelston (Central Florida).

A GLANCE AT MONTANA STATE
The Bobcats start the season on Friday with their neutral-site, afternoon match with Utah Tech. MSU finished last season with a record of 13-7, finishing fourth in the Big Sky with a mark of 4-4, then falling to Weber State, 4-0, in the first round of the Big Sky Championships. 

Montana State went 3-1 at neutral sites last season, including a 6-1 win over UT in Salt Lake City. The Bobcats' one neutral-site loss was to Weber State.

MSU returns six Bobcats, including singles and doubles first-team All-Big Sky honoree Marta Garcia-Reboredo, while adding two transfers in JoJo Bach (Portland) and Kavya Khirwar (Miranda House College).

A GLANCE AT UTAH
The Utes open the season on Saturday with a doubleheader against Utah Tech and Montana State. Utah logged a record of 12-10 last season, finishing eighth in the Pac-12 with a mark of 3-7.

Utah went 7-4 at home last season, including a 7-0 win over Utah Tech. The Utes lost four of their final five home games, falling to UCLA, USC, Arizona State and Arizona.

The Utes bring back four returners while welcoming two DI transfers in Dylan Lolofie (Weber State) and Emma Valletta (Virginia Commonwealth).

LOOK BACK AT THE FALL SCHEDULE
  • IDAHO STATE INVITATIONAL: The Trailblazers earned four wins in singles play (Ana Gutierrez Sampere, Mariana Zurita, Nutsa Tsintsadze and Olivia Bustos) and one win (Zurita & Maya Inouye) in doubles action over the three-day event in Pocatello, Idaho. 
  • WAC TENNIS INVITATIONAL: Zurita captured a big 7-5 (6-2) win over No. 7 seed Masha Vrsalovic (Abilene Christian) to pick up UT's lone win (1-3) in Abilene, Texas.
  • UNLV WATANABE CLASSIC: Utah Tech totaled six wins across the three-day tournament in Las Vegas, Nevada. Zurita notched a win in singles play as well as in doubles action with Inouye. Raquel Roshak and Laura Coulome both tallied two wins in singles action over the final two days.

MEET THE TRAILBLAZERS
The 2024-25 roster consists of eight student-athletes with one senior, two juniors, three sophomores and two freshmen. Five Trailblazers are international students and three hail from the United States. Coulome (Eastern Arizona) and Nicole Kells (Alcorn State) both started their collegiate careers at other schools.

Head coach Eric Pelton is in his 19th season at the helm of Utah Tech women's tennis. Pelton has totaled 104 wins at UT and winning seasons in 2014 (12-9), 2017 (9-8), 2019 (13-4) and 2020 (6-3).

2024 IN REVIEW
The Trailblazers wrapped up their fourth and final season of transition to Division I in 2024 with a 6-16 (0-7 WAC) record, defeating UT Dallas, Colorado Mesa, Ottawa University (Ariz.), Arizona Christian along with a pair of wins over Mesa Community College.

The Trailblazers wrap up the month on Saturday, Jan. 25 with a match at in-state foe Utah State at 10 a.m. in Logan, Utah.
