Trailblazers Tripped Up by ACU on Saturday

Utah Tech dropped the middle game of its three-game WAC weekend home series with Abilene Christian, 9-4, on Saturday afternoon at Bruce Hurst Field.

Utah Tech (10-32/8-15 WAC) ran into a little bit of bad luck in the top of the first inning when with a runner on first base and nobody out, ACU infielder Benjamin Greer laced a comebacker to Trailblazer pitcher Cade Montgomery (L, 0-2).

The hard-hit ball glanced off of Montgomery's glove and bounded into right field, which turned a possible double-play chance into a hustle double for Greer, and the Wildcats (26-17/13-7 WAC) were set up with runners at second and third.

ACU managed to drive in both of those base runners, and struck for two more runs in the frame to bolt out to an early 4-0 lead.

The Trailblazers quickly got one of those runs back when Kyle McDaniel homered to lead off the Utah Tech first inning. The opposite field shot over the left centerfield wall was the freshman's third homer of the season, which made it a 4-1 game.

However Utah Tech could draw no closer as the Wildcats plated two runs in the fourth, and three more in the seventh, to clinch the overall series win.

The Trailblazers scored all four of their runs via the long ball. Chase Rodriguez connected on his sixth homer of the season on the first pitch he saw to lead off the Blazer fifth, while Morgan Albrecht belted his first home run as a Trailblazer, a two-run shot with two outs in the bottom of the ninth.

Utah Tech finished with nine hits on the day, with McDaniel and Petey Soto Jr. tallying two hits apiece.

Utah Tech will look to salvage the final game of the three-game set on Sunday beginning 12:05 p.m.
