Utah Tech was done in by a late Abilene Christian rally in a 9-7 loss in the final game of its three-game WAC weekend home series on Sunday afternoon at Bruce Hurst Field.
Â
The Trailblazers (10-33/8-16 WAC), who had played from behind the entire series heading into Sunday's finale, scored runs in each of their first four offensive frames en route to a 5-0 lead after four innings complete.
Â
After Utah Tech cracked the scoreboard on a
Hunter Katschke RBI-flyout in the first, the Blazers struck for two more runs in the second.Â
Â
Jack Walker tripled in
Petey Soto Jr., who was plunked with one out in the frame, while Walker scampered home two pitches later when
Ethan He laid down a perfectly executed suicide squeeze bunt.
Â
Katschke collected his second RBI of the day with his team-leading ninth home run of the season with two outs in the third. Walker then followed suit an inning later with a solo blast of his own, his third of the year, with one out in the fourth that staked Utah Tech to a five-run cushion.
Â
Meanwhile, junior lefthander
Carston Herman (ND) grinded his way through the first four innings of his start, keeping the Wildcats off the scoreboard while limiting ACU to four hits over that stretch.
Â
ACU (27-17/14-7 WAC) managed to break through against Herman and the Blazers in the fifth with three-straight, one-out hits to push across a pair of runs and cut the deficit to 5-2.
Â
Herman battled back to strike out Garrett Williams looking for the second out, then got Maddox Miesse to foul out down the right field line to escape further damage.
Â
The Trailblazers used the long ball to get one of those runs back in the home fifth when
Brennen Study connected for his second homer of the year to make it a 6-2 game.
Â
Utah Tech would turn the game over to its bullpen, and the Wildcats pounced for seven-unanswered runs of the next three innings, culminating with a four-run eighth that put ACU on top 9-6.
Â
The Trailblazers had one more chance to tie or walk off with a win in the ninth after
Hank Dodson and Katschke both reached on one-out singles.Â
Â
Aaron Perez then beat out a potential game-ending double play chance that saw the relay throw sail wide of the bag at first base, which allowed Dodson to score from second base.
Â
Garrett Cutting then stepped and laced a towering shot to left center field, but ACU outfielder Reese Borho made a leaping grab while banging into outfield wall to end the game.Â
Â
Utah Tech lost despite outhitting ACU 12-10, with eight different Trailblazers collecting at least one hit. Walker finished a double shy of hitting for the cycle as he went 3-for-4 to go with his two RBI and two runs scored, while Katschke and Study each tallied two hits apiece.Â
Â
Herman, who saw his career-high scoreless inning streak halted at 11-plus in the fifth, struck out three and scattered two runs and six hits over five innings complete, but he did not figure into the decision.Â
Â
Utah Tech will wrap up its five-game homestand with a non-conference tilt against in-state rival Utah Valley on Monday afternoon. First pitch at Bruce Hurst Field is set for 4:05 p.m.
