Despite a furious late-inning rally, Utah Tech baseball could not overcome a pair of big Tarleton State offensive innings in a 10-7 loss in the final game of a three-game WAC weekend series on Sunday afternoon at Bruce Hurst Field.
Tarleton pounced on the Trailblazers (9-26/7-11 WAC) from the get-go as the first six Texan batters reached base as part of a four-run first inning.
Utah Tech managed to get one of those runs back in the home first thanks to a two-out Texan error, only to see Tarleton State push its lead back to four runs following a Trace Morrison solo home run to lead off the third.
The Trailblazers countered with a long ball of their own in the home half of the frame when
Hank Dodson rocketed a two-run homer over the left field wall to cut the deficit to 5-3 after three innings complete.
Tarleton (20-15/10-8 WAC) blew the game open in the fifth, striking for four more runs on five hits, with the big blow coming on a one-out, two-run Kooper Shook single through the drawn-in infield, which staked the Texans to a commanding 9-3 advantage.
Utah Tech clapped back with four-unanswered runs in the seventh and eighth stanzas, highlighted by a three-run
Kyle McDaniel opposite home run to left field in the seventh.
The Blazers then made it a 9-7 game in the eighth on a
Chase Rodriguez double to left center, which brought up the potential tying run with one out in the frame. However two Texan relievers were able to record the final two outs in the inning to preserve their lead.
Trailing by three after Tarleton pinch runner Slade McCloud stole a big insurance run in the top of the ninth, Utah Tech had one more chance when both Dodson and
Aaron Perez singled to again bring up the potential tying run with two outs.
Unfortunately for the homestanding Trailblazers, Texan reliever Jack Driskell (S, 3) was able to get
Levi Randall to fly out deep down the left field line to end the game.
Dodson finished with two hits to lead the Trailblazers, who pounded out eight hits on the afternoon.
Utah Tech will head back out on the road for four games this upcoming week, beginning with a quick trip up Interstate 15 to Provo for a midweek match-up at in-state rival BYU.
The game, which was originally scheduled for Monday night, was moved to Tuesday night due to forecasted inclement weather. First pitch at Miller Park is slated for 6:05 p.m. (MT).
