Utah Tech could not overcome a big BYU second inning as the Trailblazers suffered an 11-6 home loss to their in-state rivals on Tuesday night at Bruce Hurst Field.
After the two sides each plated single runs in the first inning, BYU (10-8) erupted for eight runs in the second stanza, then tacked on a single run in the third to race out to a 10-1 advantage.
Utah Tech (5-16) tried to chip away at the deficit, scoring a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth, along with single runs in the seventh and ninth frames.
However the Trailblazers were doomed by three inning-ending double plays in the third, fourth and fifth frames as they came away with a 2-2 split of their just completed four-game homestand.
Blake Borgogno and
Karson Irvin each collected two hits as Utah Tech pounded out 10 hits on the night. Borgogno also drove in two runs, while
Aaron Perez tallied three RBI, and Irvin, who doubled and legged out the Blazers' first triple of the season, scored three runs.
Utah Tech returns to Western Athletic Conference play this weekend with a three-game road series at Seattle U. Friday's series opener will start at 4 p.m. (PT), followed by game two on Saturday at 2 p.m. (PT), and Sunday's series finale at 12 noon (PT).
