Utah Tech dropped the final game of its 2024 season opening series with Washington State by a 5-1 count on Sunday afternoon at Bruce Hurst Field.
Â
The Trailblazers (1-3) were held to just one run and seven hits in the game, with the lone tally coming in the home second on a
Petey Soto Jr. run-scoring flyout.
Â
Washington State (3-1) scored all the runs it needed in the top of the second thanks to a solo Casen Taggart home run, which was followed three batters later by a Nate Swarts two-run shot over the left field wall. The Cougars would later tack on a pair of insurance runs in the fifth inning.
Â
Brennen Study and
Blake Borgogno each collected two hits to lead the Blazer offense, while
Hunter Katschke doubled in four plate appearances, which was his fifth extra-base hit overall in four-game series.
Â
Junior RHP
Ky Decker (L, 0-1) struck out one and surrendered five runs and eight hits over five innings in his Utah Tech debut. Meanwhile four Blazer relievers combined to strike out five and limit the Cougars to just two hits over the final four innings. Â
Â
Utah Tech will open up the road portion of the 2024 season this Tuesday afternoon against another PAC-12 opponent in Arizona. First pitch at Hi Corbett Field in Tucson is set for 2 p.m. (MT).Â
