Utah Tech saw its modest two-game win streak halted after a 5-3 loss to Wichita State in 10 innings on Friday afternoon at Bruce Hurst Field.
The Trailblazers (2-4) led 3-1 after five complete, opening the scoring with a run in the second before striking for two more in the home fifth.
Ethan He got Utah Tech on the board with a sacrifice flyout to center that plated
Parker Schmidt, who doubled to lead off the frame. Then after the Shockers (2-3) knotted the score at 1-1 in the third,
Bryker Hurdsman put the Blazers back on top two innings later with a two-run double to right center.
Junior righthander
Brett Porthan (ND) rebounded from his tough season debut a week ago as he breezed through the first five innings, striking out three while limiting WSU to one run and three hits.
Wichita State would threaten in the sixth after two singles put runners at the corners with one out. Junior reliever
Ben Hart got the call out of the bullpen and on his second pitch he induced a bounding ball to second base for a potential inning ending double play.
The Trailblazer infield recorded the force out at the second base bag, but the relay throw was late, allowing the run to score. However the umpires ruled that the Shocker baserunner obstructed the relay throw and awarded the double play, which negated the run and preserved UT's two-run advantage.
WSU would eventually draw even at 3-3 in the seventh after a two hits and an error led to a pair of run-scoring groundouts.
Utah Tech had its chance to take the lead back in the home seventh, loading the bases with two outs, but Shocker reliever Caden Favors (W, 1-0) escaped the stanza with the tie intact.
In the UT ninth, Hurdsman rapped a lead-off single to left, which was followed by a throwing error by Favors on a
Sean Keating bunt to give the Blazers runners at first and second with nobody out.
Favors retired the next batter he faced and escaped the jam two pitches later with a 5-3 double play to send the game to the tenth.
Wichita State would break the tie with two runs in the top of the frame, while Favors kept UT off the scoreboard in the home tenth to even the series at a game apiece.
Utah Tech finished with nine hits, three of which came off the bat of Schmidt, while Hurdsman and
Tyson Fisher each had two safeties.
The two teams will wrap up their four-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon beginning at 12:05 p.m.
