Breaunna Gillen led four Trailblazers in double figures as Utah Tech slipped past Seattle U in overtime, 79-73, on Thursday night inside the Redhawk Center.
Â
The Trailblazers have won three of their last four games to improve to 17-9 overall, 9-6 in WAC play, while Seattle U fell to 4-21, 4-11 in conference action.
How it happenedÂ
Utah Tech hit three of its first four 3-pointers, with two coming off the early hot hand of
Maggie McCord, to open up a quick 11-4 lead four minutes into play.Â
Â
The Redhawks managed to narrow the gap to 13-10, but the Trailblazers closed the first quarter with a 10-5 spurt en route to a 23-15 cushion after the first 10 minutes.Â
Â
UT would push its advantage to eight at 29-21 after a
Taylia Stimpson bucket, but Seattle U responded with a 9-2 run to make it a one-point game at 31-30 with two minutes remaining the half.
Â
However the Blazers would not relinquish the lead, thanks to pair of
Amber Kartchner 3-pointers, though the Redhawks would match that with two treys of their own, as Utah Tech retreated to the locker room clinging to a 37-36 halftime edge.Â
Â
Seattle U, which had not led since netting the first two points of the game, wrestled the lead back in the third, thanks in large part to guard Peyton Howard, who scored 13 of her team's 18 points as the Redhawks owned a 54-48 lead at the quarter's end.
Â
Howard went 6-of-8 from the floor with a 3-pointer, and managed to outscore the Blazers in the frame by a 13-11 count.
Â
The Redhawks saw their lead swell to eight early in the fourth, but Utah Tech methodically chipped away at the deficit, and would eventually pull even at 65-65 after a Kartchner free throw with 46 seconds left in regulation.
Â
Then after Utah Tech forced a turnover on the Redhawks' ensuing possession, McCord drew a foul and hit both free throws to put the Blazers up two with 26.7 seconds to go.
Â
Seattle U tied the game at 67-67 on its next trip down, giving the ball back to Utah Tech with 17.8 on the clock. The Trailblazers called timeout to set up a final play, but the Redhawks denied a shot in the paint to force overtime.
Â
Utah Tech immediately took control in the extra period as Gillen and Kartchner both drilled 3-pointers to quickly put the Trailblazers up six. Seattle U would pull to within two late, but Gillen and
Emily Isaacson combined to go 6-for-6 at the foul line over the final 26 seconds to seal the road win.Â
Â
Numbers to know
Gillen scored seven of her game-high 20 points in overtime, and filled the stat sheet with six rebounds, four assists and four steals. The senior guard went 6-of-15 from the floor, but was 7-of-8 at the line, with four of those charity tosses coming in the extra period.Â
Â
Kartchner finished with 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting with four 3-pointers. Meanwhile McCord notched her fourth double-double of the year with 16 points and a team-high 10 rebounds, and
Averi Papa chipped in 12 points with seven boards.Â
Â
Utah Tech shot 39.4 percent (26-of-66) from the floor, which included a 12-of-39 effort (.308) from the perimeter. UT also hit on 15-of-20 (.750) at the line, but was outrebounded by a 48-39 count. However that stat was offset by the Blazers only turning the ball over a WAC season-low tying nine times, while they forced 16 Seattle U miscues Â
Â
Irena Korolenko paced four Redhawks in double figures with 17 points. Seattle U connected on 28-of-74 (.378) of its field goal attempts, which included a 10-of-34 (.294) clip from beyond the arc, and was 7-of-10 (.700) at the charity stripe.Â
