Utah Tech could not hold on to a double-digit fourth quarter lead as the Trailblazers dropped a tough 75-71 road decision at California Baptist on Saturday afternoon inside the CBU Events Center.
How it happened
Trailing 39-30 in the early moments of the third quarter, Utah Tech (17-10/9-7 WAC) rattled off a 10-2 spurt to make it a one-point game at 41-40 after a
Maggie McCord 3-pointer with three minutes gone in the frame.
CBU (16-11/12-4 WAC) managed to stretch its advantage back to six, 48-42, over the next two minutes, but the Trailblazers would close the quarter with a 13-2 run to erase the deficit and take a 55-50 lead.
Breaunna Gillen and
Averi Papa combined to score 20 of Utah Tech's 25 third quarter points, including all 13 points in the quarter-ending run.
Utah Tech extended its lead to as many as 10 points on a couple of occasions in the fourth, and enjoyed a 62-52 cushion with 6:48 remaining.
However the Lancers would rally with nine-straight points to trim to 63-62, and would eventually retake the lead at 70-68 after a Chloe Webb bucket with 1:39 to go.
The Blazers would pull even at 71-71 after a Gillen free throw with 49 seconds left, but CBU scored the game's final four points to escape with the home win.
Numbers to know
Gillen scored 11 of her game-high 24 points in that third quarter, and went 7-of-12 from the floor on the day with three 3-pointers. The senior guard just missed posting her second career triple-double by three assists as she finished with 10 rebounds and seven dimes en route to her team-leading sixth double-double.
Meanwhile Papa notched her second career double-double with 14 points and a career-high 13 rebounds, all of which came on the defensive glass. The sophomore knocked down 4-of-6 from the floor with a pair of treys.
Utah Tech shot 46.9 percent (23-of-49) for the game, including a 10-of-26 (.385) clip from the perimeter. UT also hit on a season-high tying 88.2 percent of its foul shots (15-of-17).
However the Blazers were plagued by a season-high 27 turnovers and were outrebounded 46-42, including a 21-2 count on the offensive glass, which led to 14 second chance Lancer points.
Trinity San Antonio recorded a triple-double with 17 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds to lead CBU. The Lancer guard also collected six of CBU's 17 steals in the game.
CBU connected on 29-of-84 (.345) of its field goal attempts, including 40 3-point attempts (11-of-40; .275).

Utah Tech will close out the 2022-23 regular season with two more games this upcoming, starting with its home finale vs. Grand Canyon on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. The Trailblazers will then head to Orem for the regular season finale at in-state rival Utah Valley on Thursday, March 2.
