Gillen Joins the 1,000-Point Club as the Blazers Rally Past UTRGV Saturday

On a day when Breaunna Gillen became the fifth member of Utah Tech's 1,000-point club, the senior led four Trailblazers in double figures with 24 points in an 89-86 come-from-behind home win over UTRGV on Senior Day Saturday inside the Burns Arena.

How it happened
Utah Tech (16-9/8-6 WAC) led 18-15 after the first quarter, but UTRGV quickly erased the deficit with eight-straight points to begin the second quarter and open up a seven point lead at 25-18.

The Trailblazers battled back with a 15-6 spurt over a four-plus minute span to wrestle the lead back at 33-31 after an Emily Isaacson 3-pointer, and held a slim 39-38 advantage at the halftime break.

UTRGV (9-16/3-11 WAC) would get off to another quick start to open second half, outscoring Utah Tech 19-3 over the first 3:36 of the stanza to race out to a commanding 57-42 cushion.

Trailing 65-51 with two-plus minutes to go in the third, Utah Tech closed the frame with a 13-3 run to pull to within four at 68-64. Isaacson knocked down a pair of threes in the run, while Gillen chipped in five points, including a conventional three-point play.

The Trailblazers would finally pull even at 74-74 with 5:38 remaining after an Amber Kartchner lay-in, and would regain the lead at 76-74 after a Gillen drive and score with 4:14 to play.

With the game knotted at 82-82 with under two minutes left, Gillen gave the Blazers the lead for good with another lay-in. Maggie McCord drained a 3-pointer on UT's next trip down, while Gillen hit two free throws as Utah Tech scored seven-straight and held on from there for the victory.

Numbers to know
Gillen flirted with a triple-double as she added seven rebounds and six assists to her final stat line. With her six assists (160 asts) on Saturday, she broke her own single season assist record that she set last year with 156 dimes. The senior connected on 9-of-17 from the floor and 5-of-6 at the foul line.

Gillen (1,007 pts), who is already Utah Tech's career assists leader (353), scored her historic 1,000th-career point on a leaner in the paint with 6:18 to go in the fourth quarter. She also became just the third player in program history with 1,000 career points and at least 200 assists (Johnna Brown – 1,212 pts/232 asts; Kaylah Miller – 1,055 pts/200 asts).

Isaacson tallied a season-high tying 22 points on 8-of-13 shooting, including a 6-of-9 clip from the perimeter. Her six 3-pointers also tied a season high and she also pulled down five caroms.

Kartchner filled the stat sheet with 15 points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals. The freshman knocked down 7-of-10 from the floor. Meanwhile McCord chipped in 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting with a pair of 3-pointers.

Utah Tech shot 57.4 percent (35-of-61) from the floor, which tied for the second-highest shooting percentage this season (vs Utah State; 11/15). The Trailblazers also hit on 10-of-24 (.417) from the perimeter and went 9-of-15 (.600) at the foul line.

Iyani Dorsey paced four Vaqueros in double figures with a game-high 26 points. UTRGV connected on 35-of-61 (.391) of its field goal attempts, which included an 11-of-36 (.306) from beyond the arc, and was 21-of-25 (.840) at the charity stripe.

Up next
Utah Tech will play three of its final four regular season games on the road, beginning with a two-game West Coast trip that starts at Seattle U next Thursday, Feb. 23. The Trailblazers will follow that up with a road date at California Baptist on Saturday, Feb. 25.
