Trailblazers Clipped by Stephen F. Austin Thursday Night

Utah Tech kept pace with one of the WAC's top teams in Stephen F. Austin, but could not come away with a big conference win as the Trailblazers fell 72-56 on Thursday night inside the Burns Arena.

How it happened
Utah Tech (15-9/7-6 WAC) jumped out to a quick 8-6 advantage, spurred on a 3-pointer from reigning WAC player of the week Amber Kartchner, which came as part of a 6-0 spurt.

SFA quickly countered with a 13-4 run, thanks in part to three Tyler McCliment-Call perimeter jumpers, as the Lady 'Jacks opened up a 19-12 lead.

The Trailblazers managed to stop the run with consecutive treys from Taylia Stimpson and Brooke Vance, but SFA closed the first quarter with five-straight points, including another McCliment-Call 3-pointer, en route to 24-18 cushion after the opening frame.

The Lady 'Jacks (22-4/12-2 WAC) pushed their lead to eight on their first possession of the second period, only to see Utah Tech score nine-unanswered to wrestle the lead away at 27-26. Breaunna Gillen accounted for five of the Blazers' nine points, while a Kartchner steal and lay-in put UT back on top.

However Utah Tech could not build on its lead as Stephen F. Austin clapped back with seven-straight points and outscored the Trailblazers 18-6 over the final 7:47 of the stanza to take a 44-33 lead into the halftime intermission.

Utah Tech managed to the deficit to eight at 48-40 in the early moments of the third quarter, but SFA guard Jordan Harrison would score her team's next eight points to extend the Lady 'Jacks advantage to 55-40. SFA maintained a double-digit cushion the rest of the way and led by as many as 23 points in the fourth quarter before settling for the 16-point road win.

Numbers to know
Gillen led the Trailblazers with a co-game high 19 points on 7-of-13 shooting. The senior guard hit a pair of 3-pointers and also dished out four assists and grabbed two rebounds.

Gillen's (983 pts) 19 points on Thursday night left her just 17 points shy of becoming the fifth player in program history to score at least 1,000 career points.

Avery Papa was only other Blazer to score in double figures as she tallied 10 points on 4-of-9 from the floor.

Utah Tech shot 42.0 percent (21-of-50) on the night, which included an 8-of-27 effort (.296) from beyond the arc, and went 6-of-8 (.750) at the foul line. The Trailblazers were also outrebounded by a 43-30 count, despite a game-high 12 boards from Maggie McCord.

Harrison led three Lady 'Jacks in double figures with 19 points, while Aiyana Johnson posted a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. SFA shot 36.8 percent (25-of-68) from the floor and 32.3 percent (10-of-31) from three-point country, though the Lady 'Jacks managed to pull down 22 offensive rebounds, which led to 21 second-chance points.
