Utah Tech women's basketball suffered a 99-51 loss to Stephen F. Austin on Thursday evening.
What head coach JD Gustin said: "Disappointing effort tonight for sure from our entire team. Â SFA is terrific defensively but when they make 3's, they take it to another level. Â It will be interesting to see how we respond and play Saturday against a good SHSU team."
How it happened: The Trailblazers started out the game up 4-0 with two quick buckets from
Amber Kartchner and
Breaunna Gillen. The Lumberjacks went on a 10-0 run from there that was  broken up by two free-throws from Gillen.
Maggie McCord was able to use her five first-quarter points to draw the Blazers within 11 at the end of the first quarter and after one the Blazers trailed 24-13.
The three-pointers started to fall in the second quarter. Gillen was able to put two down in the second quarter, taking her to double-digits on the night for her 14th straight game before the halftime break.Â
Despite improving to a .417 shooting percentage in the second quarter, the Blazers were unable to bring the result back within single digits and trailed 47-23 at the half.
The Trailblazers were able to improve their shooting in the third quarter, going 50% from the field. They were able to go back and forth with the Jacks through the opening five minutes of the quarter, but a series of three's from SFA gave them a 25 point lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The Lumberjacks were able to close out the win in the fourth quarter after out-scoring Utah Tech 31-8. The Blazers will head to Saturday's contest with Sam Houston having suffered a 99-51 loss against the reigning conference champions.
Leaders: Utah Tech was led by Gillen who posted 19 points, shooting 6-12 from the field.Â
McCord, Averi Papa and Emily Isaacson each had three rebounds to lead the team.
Gillen, Papa and Aubrey Amendala each had two assists.
Comparison: Utah Tech ended the game shooting 38 percent from the field, 33 percent from the three and 82 percent from the free throw line. UT totaled 17 rebounds, seven assists, eight steals and 26 turnovers.Â
Stephen F. Austin shot 61 percent from the field, 50 percent from the three and 72 percent from the free throw line. The Lumberjacks totaled 36 rebounds, 29 assists, 16 steals and 18 turnovers.
Notes to Know: Utah Tech is now 9-5 on the season and 1-2 in conference play.
Next Up: The Trailblazers will head to Houston for a Saturday afternoon game with the Sam Houston State Bearkats. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. (MT). After that the Trailblazers will return home for two games with Abilene Christian and New Mexico State.
