Trailblazers bounce back with 79-67 win over Bearkats

Utah Tech women's basketball controlled all the momentum and came away with a 79-67 win over Sam Houston State Saturday afternoon. 

What Head Coach JD Gustin said: "This team has grit. They have great leadership. They believe in each other and how we play. This is definitely a big win for our program and I'm super proud of them."

How it happened:  The Trailblazers started out the game hot with a 6-0 run. Sam Houston brought the score within two but Utah Tech never gave up the lead and continued to control the first quarter. As the first quarter ended, UT had a 21-16 lead. 

The Bearkats surged in the second quarter and were able to tie things up at 33-33 going into halftime. 

Utah Tech wasted no time capturing the momentum in the third quarter. The Trailblazers outscored the Bearkats 13-3 over the course of six minutes. UT pushed on for an 11 point lead going into the final quarter of play. 

With two just over two minutes left to play, the Trailblazers pushed their lead out to 18 points, the largest of the game. Utah Tech continued to dominate and came out with a 79-67 win over Sam Houston. 

Leaders: Utah Tech had four Trailblazers score in double figures and was led by Breaunna Gillen who had 21 points. Averi Papa posted a career high with 19 points. Amber Kartchner put up 15 points while Emily Isaacson had 12. 

Maggie McCord led Utah Tech with 12 rebounds. Kartchner recorded a career high with eight assists. 

Comparison: Utah Tech ended the game shooting 55 percent from the field, 46 percent from the three and 70 percent from the free throw line. UT totaled 42 rebounds, 16 assists, seven steals and 17 turnovers.

Sam Houston shot 31 percent from the field, 32 percent from the three and 36 percent from the free throw line. The Bearkats totaled 49 rebounds, 15 assists, seven steals and 10 turnovers.

Notes to Know: Utah Tech is now 10-5 on the season. 

Next Up: The Trailblazers will host Abilene Christian on Wednesday, January 11 before hitting the road to take on New Mexico State Saturday, January 14.
