Utah Tech women's basketball suffered its first home loss of the season by a 62-51 scoreline against Southern Utah on Thursday night.
How it happened: Through the first quarter the Trailblazers were able to keep the Thunderbirds at an arm's length. A pair of layups extended the T-Birds lead to seven with two minutes to go, but the Trailblazers were able to pull it within five to end the first quarter 19-14.
Through the second quarter things started to pick up for the Trailblazers. They shot 40% from the field and were able to recover the narrow deficit from the first quarter. A layup from Breaunna Gillen halfway through the quarter gave the Trailblazers their first lead of the game.
The game was level 30-30 at the halftime break.
UT was able to find some consistent scoring through the third quarter and put the T-Birds behind them. Through the final three minutes of the quarter the Trailblazers held a game-high nine point lead, but were unable to hold onto it. At the end of three, the Trailblazers lead 49-45.
The game fell back into the hands of the T-Birds in the fourth quarter. After going on an 11-0 run to earn an 11 point lead, the Trailblazers were unable to come back. At the end of the night Utah Tech was stopped by the T-Birds by a 62-51 scoreline.
Leaders: Utah Tech was led by
Breaunna Gillen who posted 18 points and had seven rebounds.
Maggie McCord led the team in rebounds with 10. Emily Isaacson had nine rebounds of her own.
Gillen led the team in assists with six, adding to her total as the all-time assist leader in Utah Tech history.
Comparison: Utah Tech ended the game shooting 31 percent from the field, 7 percent from the three and 82 percent from the free throw line. UT totaled 42 rebounds, 10 assists, five steals and nine turnovers.
Southern Utah shot 34 percent from the field, 22 percent from the three and 80 percent from the free throw line. The Lumberjacks totaled 54 rebounds, 15 assists, five steals and nine turnovers.
Notes to Know: Utah Tech is now 12-6 on the season and 4-3 in conference play.
Next Up: Utah Tech will host Tarleton State and Seattle U next weekend inside Burns Arena. The Trailblazers will face Tarleton State on Jan. 26 followed by the Redhawks on the 28th.
