Utah Tech women's basketball fought to the end for a 67-65 win over the New Mexico State Aggies on Saturday evening.
How it happened: The game started out back and forth between the Trailblazers and the Aggies. The team were matching points until
Maggie McCord sent home a driving layup to give the Trailblazers a three point lead.Â
From there, Brooke Vance drained a three and the Trailblazers held a comfortable lead to a 19-12 finish at the end of the first quarter.
Utah Tech went into the second quarter with an eight point lead and was able to hold onto it throughout. The Trailblazers had a nine point lead with four minutes to play courtesy of a Brooke Vance three-pointer, her second on the night.
At the halftime break the Trailblazers held a five-point lead by a 30-25 scoreline.
Out of the break the Trailblazers were able to extend their lead to 12 points after Breaunna Gillen sent home a driving layup. The Aggies tried to fight their way back, but another three from Vance extended the Blazers lead back to a game-high 13 point split.
After three quarters the Traiblazers led 51-46.
To open the fourth quarter the Aggies hit a three to make it a two point game. Through the opening half of the quarter the teams were going back and forth with the Aggies trying to claw their way back into the game.
The Aggies drew the game level with 38 seconds to play, but Breaunna Gillen hit a buzzer beater jumper inside the paint to seal the victory for the Trailblazers.
Leaders: Utah Tech had four Trailblazers score in double figures and was led by
Breaunna Gillen who had 19 points and three rebounds.
Maggie McCord finished the night with 11 points,
Amber Kartchner with 15 and
Emily Isaacson with 10.
McCord and Vance led Utah Tech with nine rebounds.Â
Comparison: Utah Tech ended the game shooting 50 percent from the field, 37 percent from the three and 50 percent from the free throw line. UT totaled 33 rebounds, 10 assists, eight steals and 21 turnovers.
New Mexico State shot 30 percent from the field, 16 percent from the three and 82 percent from the free throw line. The Aggies totaled 38 rebounds, 11 assists, 14 steals and 10 turnovers.
Notes to Know: Utah Tech is now 12-5 on the season and 4-2 in WAC action. Gillen has also scored in double figures in all 17 games this season. Â
Next Up: The Trailblazers will return home to face in-state rival Southern Utah on January 19.
