Dixie State fell victim to a late UNLV rally as the Trailblazers dropped a hard fought 3-2 non-conference decision to the Rebels on Tuesday night at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.
Â
DSU (14-18) drew first blood with a run in the opening frame when after a
Kaden Hollow single and a two-out
Zach Thomas double,
Tyler Hollow laced an opposite field base hit to left field to score his younger brother. Unfortunately the rally would end on the play as Thomas would be thrown out at the plate thanks to an on-target throw by Rebel outfielder Austin Kryszczuk.
Â
Junior righthander
Jake Dahle made that early run hold up over his first four innings of work as he limited UNLV to just three base hits with two strikeouts.
Â
The Trailblazers pushed its lead to 2-0 in the fifth, which was started by an
Ethan He lead off double to right center.
Jagun Leavitt then bunted He to third ahead of
Shane Taylor, who lined a shot to Kryszczuk in left, but it was deep enough to allow the Blazer shortstop to score the game's second run.
Â
UNLV (22-11) threatened to tie or take the lead in the home fifth, loading the bases with three-straight one-out singles off of Dahle. However the righthander would escape the jam with the lead intact thanks to Taylor, who made to stellar plays on two sharply hit ground balls to third base to end the threat.
Â
The Rebels managed to finally crack the scoreboard in the sixth with a lead-off Henry Zeisler home run. Dahle would come back to strike out Joey Walls for the first out before giving way to
Dillon Holliday, who worked around a two-out walk to send the game to the seventh inning.
Â
DSU nursed its slim lead until the UNLV eighth when the Rebels wrestled the lead away with consecutive RBI-doubles from Edarian Williams and Gavin Mez which made a 3-2 game.Â
Â
Dixie State got the tying run on base with a
Zach Thomas walk to lead off the ninth, but the Rebels turned a back-breaking double play and recorded the final out in short order to escape with the win.
Â
Tyler Hollow collected two of the Blazers six hits on the night, and in the process moved into solo sixth place on DSU's career hits list (182). Dahle (ND) finished with three strikeouts and surrendered just one run and seven hits in 5.1 innings, but did not figure in the decision.Â
Â
Dixie State returns to WAC play this Thursday-through-Saturday with a three-game series at in-state rival Utah Valley. Games one and two of the series have been moved up to 4:05 p.m., while Saturday's finale will start at 1:05 p.m.
