Dixie State saw its modest two-game win streak halted in a 7-4 series opening loss at Nevada on Tuesday afternoon at Don Weir Field at Peccole Park.
Â
Nevada (8-5) opened the scoring with a run in the first, thanks to a pair of walks, a wild pitch and an infield single. However freshman righthander
Jacob Taggart managed to limit the damage to the one run after he turned a comebacker to the mound into a 1-4-3 double play to end the threat.
Â
DSU's best scoring chance in the early going came in the third when Blazers loaded the bases two outs.
Shane Taylor doubled, while
Kaden Hollow walked and
Tyler Hollow was hit by a pitch, but the Wolf Pack escaped the jam with their lead intact.
Â
The Pack tacked on another run in the home third with a one-out Josh Zamora RBI-single, but again Taggart would turn away a possible big Nevada inning as he induced a 6-4-3 twin killing to send the game to the fourth.
Â
Trailing 4-0 in the fifth, Dixie State (8-7) broke through with its first run of the day when Taylor scored on a two-out
Tyler Hollow opposite field single. Then in the Blazer sixth,
Tyson Fisher led of the frame with a solo home run over the centerfield wall to make it a 4-2 game.
Â
Nevada got those runs back and more in the home sixth as the Wolf Pack broke the game open with three runs on three hits to take a commanding 7-2 lead.
Â
DSU made one final push in the ninth as the Blazers pushed across two runs on a Taylor single and a passed ball, but they could not draw any closer as Nevada induced a game-ending ground out to wrap up the win.
Fisher and Taylor each collected two hits as the Blazers finished with seven safeties on the afternoon, while Fisher's sixth inning homer was his third in his last three games overall. Taggart (L, 0-1) pitched into fourth and surrendered three runs and five hits with one strikeout in a losing effort. Â
Â
Dixie State will close its five-game road trip with the series finale in Reno on Wednesday beginning at 12 noon (PT).
