Dixie State saw its three-game winning streak come to a halt thanks to a 77-53 loss at Sam Houston on Thursday night inside the Bernard Johnson Coliseum. The loss evened the Trailblazers season mark to 11-11 overall, 4-5 in WAC play.
SHSU (14-10/9-2 WAC) took control of the contest with a 15-4 run to turn an early 13-10 lead into a 28-14 advantage with 7:53 to play in the first half. The Bearkats shot nearly 71 percent to begin the game, including 4-of-8 from the perimeter, with three of those treys coming in their run.
The Trailblazers, who misfired on 12 of their first 16 shots, counter-punched with 10-straight points of their own, with their captains
Cameron Gooden and
Hunter Schofield leading the charge offensively. The duo alternated made lay-ups, and Gooden capped the rally with another drive in the lane to make it a 28-24 game with 3:16 remaining.
Sam Houston would close the half with a 10-4 spurt, with seven of those points coming on second and third chances on the offensive glass, as the Bearkats carried a 38-28 cushion into the halftime break.
DSU managed to trim the Sam Houston lead to eight with a
Dancell Leter bucket to open the second half.
However that would be as close as the Blazers would get as SHSU maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way, thanks in large part to a back-breaking 14-4 run to extend the lead to 20 at 62-42 with 6:33 to go. The Bearkats did not look back from there to race away with their ninth conference win.
Schofield led the Blazers with 15 points, 10 of which came in the first half, though he did see his school record streak of consecutive 20-point games stopped at four. Leter was the only other Trailblazer in double figures with 12 points, while Gooden finished with eight points and a game-high six assists.
Dixie State was done in by a season-low 28.8 percent shooting night (17-of-59), which included a paltry 5-of-26 (.192) from the perimeter. The Blazers also hit on just 66.7 percent (14-of-21) of their free throws and were outrebounded by a 49-36 margin,
WAC leading scorer Savion Flagg paced the Bearkats with a game-high 26 points, including 15 points in the second half. SHSU shot 46.2 percent (30-of-65) from the floor with 10 made 3-pointers (10-of-27; .370).
Dixie State concludes its Texas road trip in Nacogdoches with a Saturday matinee at WAC newcomer Stephen F. Austin. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. (CT).
