Trailblazers Drop Home Finale to Seattle U Saturday Night, 73-65

DSU breaks single-season 3-point record

Dixie State men's basketball dropped a hard-fought 73-65 decision on Saturday, falling to Seattle U in the 2021-22 home finale inside the Burns Arena. The loss dropped DSU to 13-16 overall, 6-10 in WAC play, while Seattle improved to 24-8 overall and 13-4 in league play.

Despite coming up short vs. the No. 2 team in the WAC, the Trailblazers still managed to make some history on Senior Night, as the team honored Hunter Schofield and Mark Hatch prior to tipoff.

Dixie State connected on six triples as a team, pushing its season total to 208 to set a new single-season program record. Meanwhile, Schofield tallied 14 points to move to No. 3 on the DSU All-Time Scoring list with 1,198 career points.

The teams battled back-and-forth through the first 12 minutes of the first half, a span that saw three lead changes and three ties, until a Redhawk basket knotted the game at 15-15 just before the under-8 media timeout.

The Trailblazers responded with a 6-0 run over the next two minutes to take its largest lead of the game at 21-15. Isaiah Pope sparked the run, while Cameron Gooden and Frank Staine each added two points.

Seattle U countered with a 13-2 stretch over the next four minutes to retake a 28-23 advantage, its largest of the first half.

Schofield snapped the run with a layup, and the Trailblazers added four free throws to take back the lead at 29-28 heading into the halftime break.

Seattle U opened the second half with an 8-1 spurt, taking advantage of a pair of DSU turnovers, to claim a 38-30 lead just two minutes into the period.

Both sides traded baskets over the next eight minutes until Jacob Nicolds pulled the Trailblazers within three points at 51-48 with an offensive rebound and put back layup, followed by a 3-pointer on consecutive possessions.

The Redhawks answered with two straight buckets of their own to push the lead back to seven points at 55-48, but DSU fought back with a 7-2 run to pull within 57-55 with five minutes left after a driving layup by Andre Mulibea and a Pope free throw. But DSU would get no closer.

Seattle U scored 14 of the game's next 20 points to take a game-high lead at 71-61 with just over one minute to play, then held on for the 73-65 victory.

Three Trailblazers finished in double figures, led by Gooden with 15 points to go with four assists and four rebounds. Schofield tallied 14 points and nine rebounds in his final game in the Burns Arena, while Pope added 14 points, four rebounds, and three assists.

Dixie State shot 38 percent (24-of-62) from the field, 26 percent (6-of-23) from downtown, and 52 percent (11-of-21) from the free throw line.

Darrion Trammell paced all scorers with 16 points for Seattle, while the Redhawks shot 41 percent (25-of-60) from the field and connected on 81 percent (18-of-22) of their free-throw attempts.

DSU will close out its 2021-22 season on the road next week, traveling first to Abilene Christian on Thursday, followed by a showdown at Grand Canyon on Saturday.
