Utah Tech women's basketball opened the 2022-23 season with an 87-74 loss to PAC-12 foe, University of Washington.
What head coach JD Gustin said: "Super proud of our team for the way they competed tonight. Opening up against a PAC-12 opponent is a significant challenge and our team didn't back down at any point. We have a long way to go but this was an encouraging start."
How it happened: Utah Tech started the game out on a hot streak thanks to a 9-0 run in the first three minutes.
Emily Isaacson hit two from beyond the arc to contribute to the nine. The Trailblazers maintained the lead until UW tied it up with 2:28 left in the first quarter. That didn't deter UT at that point as the Trailblazers finished out the first quarter with a narrow 21-20 lead.
In the second quarter the Huskies strung together a 6-0 run to push out for a 31-26 lead. The Trailblazers persisted only trailing 39-35 at the half.
The Huskies pushed forward in the second half, starting the third quarter off with a 7-0 run. Breaunna Gillen sunk a jumper and drew a foul to execute a three-point play to break up UW's hot streak. While the Trailblazers found some momentum in the end of the third quarter, Utah Tech trailed 67-53.
Utah Tech started the fourth quarter out on a 6-2 run and hung with Washington the entire quarter. UT was only out scored by one point in the fourth but couldn't gain any more ground on the score deficit ending the game with an 87-74 loss.
Leaders: Utah Tech was led by Gillen who recorded a double-double with 21 points and 11 assists. She went 8-19 from the field and 5-6 from the free throw line. Isaacson also dropped double figures with 12 points going 4-8 from beyond the arc.
Maggie McCord also put up impressive numbers going 3-5 from three-point range for nine points.
Comparison: Utah Tech ended the game shooting 42 percent from the field, 32 percent from the three and 85 percent from the free throw line. The Trailblazers totaled 29 rebounds, 17 assists and 12 turnovers.
Washington shot 45 percent from the field, 25 percent from the three and 73 percent from the free throw line. The Huskies ended the game with 44 rebounds, 20 assists, and 10 turnovers.
Notes to Know: Utah Tech is now 0-1 on the season.
Next Up: The Trailblazers will host a pair of games first against Benedictine Mesa in the annual Field Trip Day on Thursday, Nov. 10 before hosting in-state rival, Utah State.
