Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Trailblazers down Redhawks 101-75 on Field Trip Day

Utah Tech women's basketball took down Benedictine Mesa 101-75 in the annual Field Trip Day.

What head coach JD Gustin said: "Our department did a great job with our annual kids game today, the elementary kids were the highlight of the day by far. I thought our opponent out played us and they deserve to be recognized for it. We struggled keeping them in front and sent them to the free throw line way too much. They were also more competitive than us. We have a ton of work to do on the defensive end.
On the bright side, we were pathetic offensively and still scored 101."

How it happened:  Maggie McCord set the pace of the game with a made three-pointer in the first six seconds. Later in the quarter, Utah Tech had a one point lead and went on a 7-0 run that was sparked by a play in the post by Brooke Vance. BMU pushed back and captured a 21-19 lead with 1:35 remaining in the quarter. As the quarter ended, UT trailed 25-24.

The Trailblazers popped off in the second quarter putting up 30 total points.  Utah Tech started the second quarter with a 14-1 run to push out for a 12 point lead. UT pushed on for a 22 point lead with just over a minute remaining in the half. Benedictine Mesa was able to sink a three and a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to 17 but Utah Tech had a 54-37 lead going into halftime.

The second half started off with Macie Warren draining back-to-back three pointers. Warren was the only Trailblazer to score in the first four minutes of the second half where she recorded four total three-pointers.

Utah Tech held Benedictine Mesa to just one field goal over a six minute period in the third quarter and outscored the Redhawks 23-18 in the third quarter. UT maintained the lead going into the fourth quarter with a 77-55 score.

For the first time in the game, the Redhawks scored first in the fourth quarter and put up eight unanswered points. Utah Tech's three minute scoring drought in that time period ended with a made three pointer by McCord. Alyson Deaver followed that up with a fastbreak layup.

UT then went on a 15-0 run and held BMU scoreless for four minutes before the game ended with a final score of 101-75.

Leaders: Utah Tech was led by Warren who recorded a new career high of 25 points with five made from beyond the arc. Breaunna Gillen also recorded double figures with 17 points and the team high of 10 assists for her second consecutive point-assist double double.

Amber Kartchner put up 16 points for a career high while Emily Isaacson dropped a double double with 13 rebounds and 12 points. McCord also recorded double figures on the boards with 12 and fell just shy of a double double with nine points.
