Utah Tech women's basketball broke a school record for most points scored in a game and popped off in a 112-61 win over LaVerne Saturday afternoon.
What head coach JD Gustin said: "I'm happy with the way we overcame a sluggish start and then responded to the challenge we gave them at halftime. We gave a better effort on the glass today but still have a ways to go. It was also fun to see our bench play well."
How it happened: After a slow first quarter, Utah Tech had a narrow 24-23 lead over La Verne. The Trailblazers started the second quarter with a made three pointer by
Maggie McCord that sparked a 9-0 run.
Later in the quarter, Utah Tech found themselves scoring 14 unanswered points holding La Verne scoreless for four minutes. As the first half ended, UT had a 52-37 lead.
Coming out of half time Utah Tech went scoreless for two minutes, a made three pointer by Emily Isaacson broke the drought and the Trailblazers proceeded to go on a 30-3 run to push for an 82-47 lead at the end of the third quarter. The Trailblazers held the Leopards scoreless for seven minutes of the third.
Utah Tech continued to charge in the fourth quarter and pushed out for a final score of 112-61.
Leaders: Utah Tech had six Trailblazers in double figures and were led by
Amber Kartchner who had a career high of 21 points. She went 8-10 from the field and went 3-5 from the free throw line. Isaacson had 17 points with five made from beyond the arc.
McCord and Breaunna Gillen each recorded double doubles with McCord dropping 16 points and pulling down a career high rebounds with 15. Gillen posted 16 points and 13 assists for her third points-assists double double of the season.
Taylia Stimpson came in off the bench and recorded a career high of 14 points going 6-8 from the field including two made three pointers.
Macie Warren was the last Trailblazer to hit double figures with 12 points.
Comparison: Utah Tech ended the game shooting 46.8 percent from the field, 34 percent from the three and 77 percent from the free throw line. UT totaled 63 rebounds, 23 assists, 16 steals and 12 turnovers.
LaVerne shot 28.2 percent from the field, 18 percent from the three and 73 percent from the free throw line. The Leopards totaled 48 rebounds, 10 assists, two steals and 22 turnovers.
Notes to Know: Utah Tech is now 4-2 on the season. This is the most points scored in a single game ever in school history. Gillen's 13 assists breaks the school record for most assists in a single game.
