Utah Tech women's basketball scored 90 or more points for the third consecutive game Friday night thanks to a 94-73 victory over Kansas City.
What head coach JD Gustin said: "Pretty good road win for us tonight. We did a good job settling in and handing the over pressure in the second half. We did a good job of getting to the free throw line and executing."
How it happened: The first quarter started out slow for the Trailblazers with UT keeping pace with Kansas City. Utah Tech found some momentum with a 6-0 run that helped drive them to a narrow 15-13 lead at the end of the initial quarter of play.
Utah Tech started the second quarter off on an 8-2 run thanks in large part to Maggie McCord's two made three pointers. At the 4:48 mark, UT pushed out for a 10 point lead over Kansas City. The Trailblazers maintained the lead for the rest of the game after that point. As the second quarter ended Utah Tech had a 40-34 lead.
In the first four seconds of the second half, Macie Warren hit one from deep beyond the arc to set the pace for the half. Late in the third quarter, the Trailblazers went on a 10-0 run to take an 18 point lead. During that time UT held the Roos to a three minute scoring drought.
The fourth quarter started with another big Blazer run this one sparked by made driving layup by Breaunna Gillen and ended with an Emily Isaacson three point play with a layup and the made and one.
With 44 seconds remaining in the game, Brook Vance sunk a three pointer to put UT at 92 points. A pair of free throws by Taylia Stimpson ended the scoring for both teams and the Trailblazers walked away with a 94-73 win.
Leaders: Utah Tech had four Trailblazers in double figures and were led by Gillen who had 25 points. She went 7-13 from the field and went 11-12 from the free throw line. She also recorded the game high of eight assists and added four steals.
Warren put up 21 points going 7-12 from the field, 2-3 from beyond the arc and 5-6 from the line. McCord added 14 points for Utah Tech and Amber Kartchner put up 12.
Emily Isaacson recorded seven boards for the team high. Freshman Alyson Deaver led in blocks with three on the night.
Comparison: Utah Tech ended the game shooting 54 percent from the field, 41 percent from the three and 86 percent from the free throw line. The Trailblazers ended the night going 25-29 from the line. UT totaled 35 rebounds, 17 assists, 10 steals and 19 turnovers.
The Roos shot 34 percent from the field, 32 percent from the three and 57 percent from the free throw line. Kansas City totaled 48 rebounds, 14 assists, 11 steals and 19 turnovers.
Notes to Know: Utah Tech is now 3-1 on the season and is on a three game winning streak.
This is the third game this season Gillen has scored 20 or more points.
Next Up: The Trailblazers will stay on the road to take on Kansas State on Sunday, Nov. 20th before returning home to take on LaVerne Nov. 26 and Texas A&M Commerce Dec. 3.
