Four Trailblazers scored in double figures as Dixie State rolled past UTRGV, 85-74, on Saturday night inside the Burns Arena. The Trailblazers have now won three of their last four games to even their record at 10-10 overall and improved to 3-4 in WAC play.
DSU used a pair of big first half scoring runs to offset an early UTRGV (6-13/1-6 WAC) 3-point barrage. The Vaqueros knocked down four of their first five perimeter jumpers, but thanks to a 15-3 Blazer spurt, Dixie State weathered the early flurry to bolt to a 19-12 advantage following a
Cameron Gooden trey.
UTRGV countered with five unanswered points to trim the deficit to two, but the Trailblazers countered with 14-straight points to extend to a 33-17 lead following a
Noa Gonsalves 3-pointer with 7:05 remaining in the first half.
Trevon Allfrey kick-started the rally with a three, while
Isaiah Pope followed with consecutive jumpers. DSU also got the job done on the defensive end during run, thanks to a pair of highlight reel blocks from freshman post player
Trey Edmonds, which were followed by a
Dancell Leter steal and breakaway jam.
Dixie State led 50-33 at the intermission and would push that advantage to as many as 23 points in the second half before settling for its second double-digit win in as many nights.
Hunter Schofield notched his third-straight 20-plus point night as the senior led the Blazers with a game-high 22 points on 10-of-19 shooting. Schofield (1,049 pts), who pulled down seven rebounds, also moved into a tie for sixth place on DSU's career points list with former DSU forward
Dalton Groskreutz (1,049; 2008-14).
Pope finished with a season-high 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting with three 3-pointers, while Leter tied a WAC career-high with 15 points on 5-of-6 from the floor and 5-of-7 at the foul line. In addition,
Frank Staine posted his first double-double of the season, and third of his career, with 11 points and a season-best 10 rebounds.
Dixie State shot nearly 56 percent (19-of-34) in the first half, but cooled to a 34.3 percent clip (12-of-35) in the second frame to finish the night at 44.9 percent, which included an 8-of-24 (.333) result from 3-point country. DSU outrebounded UTRGV by a 52-41 count and was credited with 19 assists on its 31 made baskets.
Xavier Johnson, who accounted for three of UTRGV's four 3-pointers early in the game, led the Vaqueros with 22 points with five made threes overall. UTRGV shot an even 40.0 percent (28-of-70) on the night, including a 9-of-25 (.360) effort from the perimeter.
Dixie State opens a three-game road swing next Saturday when the Trailblazers travel to the "Windy City" for a WAC match-up at Chicago State. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. (CT).
