Box Score 2 The Dixie State women's tennis team dropped two matches Saturday afternoon, falling 7-0 in both matches.
Head coach Eric Pelton said, "It was a quick start to the season but the girls came out and played some great tennis against a very strong team! It's was exciting to see where they already are at this early in the season and the big improvements they made from the first match to the second match. Looking forward to their continued growth and progress over the coming weeks! Honzaruck and Mellor continued their strong doubles Play from last year pushing the U top doubles team in both of their #1 doubles matches!"
Utah (2-0) started the morning off by sweeping the three doubles spots to take a 1-0 lead. Juliana Honczaruk and
Rachel Mellor came closest to a win, playing to a 5-7 loss in No. 1 doubles. The Utes kept their play up heading into singles and swept the Trailblazers in singles play.
The Utes would sweep the Blazers 7-0 in match one of the day.
In the afternoon match the Utes came out swinging again, but the Trailblazers held strong in the doubles matches with Juliana Honczaruk and
Rachel Mellor played No. 1 doubles to a 5-7 scoreline and
Sabrina Longson and
Ya-Chi Hsu played to 4-6 in No. 2 doubles. The Utes would ultimately take the doubles point, but the Trailblazers made improvements from the first match of the day.
The Utes quickly won the No. 3, No. 1, and No. 2 singles matches but the Trailblazers closest singles match of the day would come at the No. 5 spot. Rachel Mellor lost 1-6 in her first match against Madeline Lamoreaux, but would fight back in the second set, nearly forcing a third set with a 4-6 loss.
The Blazers were unable to find a singles win and ultimately were swept 7-0 in the afternoon match with the Utes.
Dixie State is now 0-2 in the 2022 season, their second as a Division I program. The Trailblazers will be back in action on Saturday, January 22 against in-state foe Weber State. The match is slated for noon in Ogden.
