Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | DSU Athletic Media Relations

Trailblazers Tripped Up at Seattle U Saturday, 79-68

Hunter Schofield posted game highs of 25 points and eight rebounds, and in the process became the fourth player in Dixie State's NCAA era to join the 1,000 point/400 rebound club. However it was not enough as the Trailblazers fell at Seattle U, 79-68, on Saturday afternoon at the Redhawk Center.

DSU (8-10/1-4 WAC) fell victim to a slow start offensively, misfiring on 12 of their first 17 shots while being hampered by seven early turnovers.

Seattle U took full advantage, thanks to the hot-shooting hand of Cameron Tyson, who drilled three early 3-pointers as the Redhawks broke a 9-9 tie with a decisive 19-4 run to race out to a 28-13 lead with just under seven minutes to play in the opening half.

Schofield, who scored 10 first-half points, broke the drought with a pair of free throws and a lay-in, while Jacob Nicolds knocked down a trey to make an eight-point game at 28-20 at the 5:37 mark.

Tyson countered with a 3-pointer of his own to stop the Blazer spurt, which triggered a 12-0 Redhawk rally, as Seattle U (11-4/3-0 WAC) would lead by as many as 20 points before heading into the halftime break with a commanding 44-26 cushion.

Schofield, along with front court mate Dancell Leter, got the Blazers off to a solid start to begin the second 20 minutes. Leter opened the frame with a 3-pointer and had five early points, while Schofield poured in eight points of his own, as DSU used a 13-5 spurt to pull to within 10 at 49-39 with 15:04 to play.

However that would be as close as Dixie State would get as Seattle U scored nine of the game's next 11 points, and maintained a double-digit advantage the rest of the way to earn the victory.

Schofield connected on 8-of-14 from the floor with a 3-pointer and went 8-of-10 at the line, while all eight of his rebounds came on the defensive end. In joining the exclusive point and rebound club, Schofield (1,005 pts, 404 rebounds) scored his 1,000th-career point with a lay-up with 13:20 to play in the second half, while he pulled down his 400th-career rebound earlier in the stanza.

Gooden was the only other Trailblazer to score in double figures as the junior guard finished with 10 points along with four boards, five assists and three steals.

Dixie State hit on 24-of-53 from the floor (.453), though the Blazers were just 4-of-19 (.211) from the perimeter. DSU was also 16-of-24 (.667) at the line and was outrebounded, 36-32, while the team's 19 turnovers led to 23 Redhawk points.

Tyson led four Redhawks in double figures with 25 points, with 21 of those points coming beyond the arc (7-of-11 3FG). Tyson accounted for seven of Seattle U's nine total 3-pointers (9-of-30, .300), while as a team, the Redhawks shot 41.8 percent (28-of-67) overall and were 14-of-15 (.933) at the charity stripe.

Dixie State returns to the Burns Arena for a brief two-game homestand next weekend, starting with a date vs. WAC newcomer Lamar on Thursday night, Jan. 20, at 7 p.m.
