Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | By DSU Athletics Media Relations

Volleyball falls in first two matches at BYU Invitational

Dixie State volleyball dropped a pair of matches on the first day of competition at the BYU Invitational on Friday inside the Smith Fieldhouse. DSU came up on the short end of two 3-0 losses, first to Michigan State, then to No. 13 BYU in the final match of the day.

The Trailblazers (0-5) built an 11-8 lead and later a 14-13 advantage in the first set in the opener against Michigan State before the Spartans closed the frame on a 12-5 run to take a 25-19 win. The teams played to a 15-12 score in favor of MSU in both the second and third sets. Both frames saw the Spartans use critical runs to stay in front. MSU posted a 25-17 triumph in set two before closing the match with a 25-20 victory in set three.

Dixie State hit .091 vs. MSU and had 30 kills over the three sets. Megan Treanor finished with nine kills and two service aces to lead the Trailblazers. Hannah Howard added seven kills, while Jordyn Nelson posted a team-high 18 assists.

In the nightcap against BYU, the Trailblazers found themselves down 1-0 after the Cougars stormed to 25-8 win in set one. BYU used a decisive 7-3 run midway through the second set to turn a slim 12-9 lead into a 19-12 advantage that would eventually lead to a 25-16 victory. The teams traded points through the first half of set three, and DSU battled to try to force a fourth set. The Trailblazers used a 3-0 run to tie the match at 16-16 and force BYU to call timeout. The break proved useful for the hosts, as the Cougars scored six consecutive points to build a 22-16 lead. DSU closed the gap to 23-20, but would get no closer, as BYU scored the final two points for a match-clinching 25-20 triumph.

DSU hit .043 for the match and had 23 kills. Bridgett Talia notched six kills to lead the Trailblazers, while Whittnee Nihipali added five kills, and Treanor finished with four kills.

Dixie State will close the BYU Invitational with a 4 p.m. matchup against Weber State on Saturday in Provo.
