Trailblazers drop BYU Invite finale to Weber State

Dixie State volleyball fell in its final match of the BYU Invitational, 3-1, to Weber State on Saturday, dropping three straight sets after winning the opening frame.

The Trailblazers notched six total blocks and hit .243 in the first set to claim a 25-23 triumph and build an early 1-0 lead. DSU used a 3-0 run to build a 10-7 early in the frame and would not trail throughout the remainder of the set. The Wildcats tied the game at 16-16, but DSU rattled off another 3-0 lead to stay in front, eventually clinching the set with a Chayse Daugherty kill.

Dixie State looked to do the same in the second set and promptly built a 4-1 advantage. However, Weber State had other plans, and quickly responded with a 14-4 run to take a 15-8 lead. DSU would trim the lead to 15-10, but would get no closer. The Wildcats closed the set on a 10-2 run to notch a 25-12 victory.

The teams went back and forth in set three, playing to an 8-8 tie before Weber State used a 6-1 run to jump out to a 14-9 lead. The Trailblazers countered with an 8-3 run to again pull even at 17-17. WSU scored the next three points to push the lead back to 20-17. DSU eventually closed the gap to 23-22, but the Wildcats posted back-to-back blocks to claim a 25-22 win. Daugherty recorded five kills during the set, while Whitnee Nihipali added four kills.

Weber State looked to wrap up the match quickly in set four, racing to a 19-9 lead. But the Trailblazers wouldn't go down without a fight, countering with an 8-1 run, keyed by five Nihipali kills, to pull to within 20-16 and force WSU to call a timeout. The Wildcats settled down after the timeout, clinching the match with a 5-2 run after the break.

Dixie State hit .098 for the match and tallied 42 kills over the four sets. Nihipali led the way with 13 kills and 15 digs for her third double-double of the season. Daugherty finished one dig shy of her first double-double of the season, recording 10 kills and nine digs, while Jordyn Nelson did the same with 25 assists and nine digs.

The Trailblazers will return to action with two matches against Southern Utah on September 17 in Cedar City and on September 18 in St. George.
