Dixie State secured a 2-1 overtime win against Houston Baptist on Saturday night in Saint George, Utah.
"We spent quite a bit of time this week finding pieces of confidence with guys shooting, which I thought was there tonight," said coach Broadhead.
Houston Baptist (0-5-2, 0-5-1 WAC) started the night off with a goal from near midfield at the 17" mark, midfielder Gianluca Natera snuck a ball over Jacob Moore to give the Husky's a 1-0 lead. Dixie State (2-4, 2-4 WAC) would answer with less than two minutes to play in the first half. Junior forward
Niko Shumov bent a free kick into the corner of the net at the 43" mark to lock the game up at 1-1.
The second half was scoreless, but it was far from slow. The Trailblazers went back and forth with the Husky's trading shots on goal. Midfielder Idris Albi had a chance to score at the 86" mark that landed wide of the goal, the game then went to overtime.
DSU made quick work of their first overtime this season when
Logan Beus scored his first career game winning goal only four minutes into the period. The sophomore sent a ball to the back of the net from the top of the penalty box, Alabi and Shumov assisted on the score.
"The guys were telling me all game long, coach we're not losing this game," added coach Broadhead. "There seemed to be a bit of confidence in [scoring] another goal, and I'm not surprised by the outcome after seeing them in training this week."
The match was physical and hard fought by both teams until the final whistle. There was a total of 27 fouls called, five yellow cards, and a red in 94 minutes of play. Sophomore
John Joseph received the red card in the 89th minute of play and will be forced to sit out in Dixie State's next match.
The Trailblazers out shot HBU 21-8, including a 10-4 edge on frame. Defender
Matt Lockwood led DSU in shots with four, and shots on goal with three. Netminder Jacob Moore was credited with three saves in the overtime win, including a huge pk save in the second half.
DSU will be back in action on the road on Monday, March 22 at 2 p.m. against Utah Valley in the men's soccer portion of the renewed 'Old Hammer' Rivalry.
