Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Dixie State second half surge not enough in 3-2 loss to UVU

The Dixie State women's soccer team battled for a narrow 3-2 loss to Utah Valley Saturday afternoon.

"Today was another excellent example of the competitive spirit the WAC embodies," head coach Molly Rouse said. "UVU was a quality opponent, who presented many challenges throughout the match. While we needed to be better defensively on set plays in the first half, seeing the teams second half response was nothing short of impressive. We are excited about how the team executed the halftime plan and we will continue to push for a full 90 minute performance against New Mexico State University next weekend."

The Trailblazers didn't waste much time for an offensive attack as Jill Bennett had a shot on frame in the first two minutes. However, Utah Valley was the first to get on the board with a goal in the 16th minute. The Wolverines followed that up with a goal in the 41st minute to take a 2-0 lead over Dixie State at half time.

Utah Valley put in another goal in the 55th minute to take a 3-0 lead over Dixie State. The Trailblazers picked up their intensity and gained control of the ball off a Wolverine goal kick.  Jaci Dandos-Cook crossed it into center as Whitley Griffiths took a shot for Dixie State's first goal of the game.

In the 79th minute, Sophie Stewart had the ball on the left wing. Stewart crossed it and Dandos-Cook fired off a shot that was saved, Bennett received the ricochet for a shot that was block and then Bennett fired another shot for an unassisted goal.

Dixie State was able to get one more good shot off before the game ended but wasn't able to score and Utah Valley came away with a 3-2 win.

DSU now has a  to 2-7-1 overall record on the season and will hit the road to take on New Mexico State March 25 and 27.
