Dixie State dropped the middle two games of its WAC debut series at New Mexico State by scores of 14-3 and 19-2 on Saturday afternoon at Presley Askew Field.
In game one, the Blazers struck for a run in their first at-bat when
Lane Pritchard doubled home
Cade Spurlin, who also doubled to lead off the game.
NMSU returned the favor with a run of its own in the home half of the first, then erupted for five more runs an inning later, with the big blow coming on a three-run Ethan Mann home run to centerfield. The Aggies would tack on two more runs in the fourth to extend to an 8-1 advantage.
Dixie State got two of those runs back in the fifth when
Jagun Leavitt walked and Spurlin singled ahead of
Tyler Hollow, who laced a double down the right field line to chase home both base runners and cut the deficit to 8-3.
New Mexico State countered with three runs in the home fifth thanks to a bases loaded walk and a rare two-run sacrifice fly. Brandon Dieter lifted a ball deep to straight away center, but Leavitt was there to make a leaping grab at the wall to keep the ball in play.
However head's up base running by Cal Villareal allowed him to score from second base on the play to help extend the Aggie lead to 11-3. NMSU would go on to push across three more runs in the sixth to end the game via the 10-run rule.
Spurlin and Hollow each collected two hits in the first game as DSU finished with six hits overall.
The Aggies carried their offensive momentum into the nightcap, striking for eight runs in the home second to take early control. NMSU rapped out seven hits in the rally, including a Dieter grand slam over the centerfield wall.
DSU picked up a run in third when
Ben Petty-Hull grounded a ball deep in the right side of the infield, which allowed
Jake Schulz to score all the way from second base. The Blazers also plated another run when
Kaden Hollow drove in
Jake Engel, who reached on an opposite field double down the right field line.
NMSU answered DSU's brief run with 11 unanswered runs from the fourth inning on to close out the win in seven innings.
Six different Trailblazers collected hits in the nightcap, with Engel's double and
Tanner Argyle's pinch hit two-bagger serving as DSU's lone extra base hits.
The two teams will wrap up their four-game weekend series on Sunday with a single game beginning at 12 noon (MT).
