Trailblazers Win Fourth Straight, Shoot Past Denver Saturday Night 82-62

Dixie State knocked down a school record 16 3-pointers as the Trailblazers rolled to their fourth-straight victory with an 82-62 triumph over Denver on Saturday night inside the Burns Arena.

With the win, DSU Head Coach Jon Judkins (582-279) moved into a tie with legendary Utah head women's basketball coach Elaine Elliott (582-324) atop the all-time coaching victories list (men's and women's) in Utah state collegiate basketball history.

The Blazers (5-5) shot out of the gates, hitting their first six shots, including three 3-pointers, to race out to a 15-2 lead just 3:53 into the game. Cameron Gooden paced the Trailblazers with eight points in the stretch with a pair of treys.

Dixie State scored the next five points after a Pioneer (3-9) timeout to extend to a 20-2 advantage, including the Blazers' fourth made trifecta of the run when Andre Mulibea hit from the corner.

DSU would push its lead to as many as 23 at 32-9, thanks to two more perimeter jumpers off the hand of reserve guard Noa Gonsalves. In all, the Trailblazers made eight 3-pointers in the period en route to a comfortable 48-28 lead at the halftime break.

Dixie State never saw its lead dip below 16 points in the second half, which led the partisan crowd wondering if and when the Trailblazers would break the single game 3-point standard.

The fans got their answer with 10:32 to play in the game when Hunter Schofield drove the lane and kicked out to a wide open Mulibea, who hit nothing but the bottom of the net for the record-breaking 14th 3-pointer of night to make it a 68-46 game. DSU would tack on two more treys for good measure and cruised on from there for the win.

Gooden led all scorers with 22 points on 7-of-12 shooting with three 3-pointers, with 14 of those points coming in the first half. Gooden's 22-point night was one off of his career high of 23 he set nearly one year ago to the day in DSU's road win at Denver (73-70; 12/12/21), against which coincidentally he also scored 14 first half points.

Gooden also dished out six assists (with no turnovers) and pulled down two rebounds. Meanwhile Dancell Leter added 12 points with six boards and three steals, and Frank Staine chipped in 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting with three treys.

Dixie State shot 45.8 percent (27-of-59) from the floor, which included a season-best 55.2 percent clip (16-of-29) from beyond the arc. The Blazers also shot a season high 92.3 percent (12-of-13) from the foul line and outrebounded the Pioneers by a 35-30 count.

DSU's 16 made 3-pointers broke the previous record of 13 set twice, both times on the road, with the first instance coming in the 2008-09 season at Carroll College (11/22/08). The Trailblazers also hit 13 treys in a win at Colorado Mesa (86-61; 1/26/99) during the 2018-19 campaign.

KJ Hunt led the Pioneers with 17 points and six rebounds. Denver hit on 25-of-55 (.455) from the field, including an 8-of-24 (.333) effort from beyond the arc.

Dixie State will wrap up its six-game homestand this Wednesday night against SAGU American Indian College. Tip-off inside the Burns Arena is scheduled for 7 p.m.
