Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | DSU Athletic Media Relations

Trailblazers Rout SAGU-AIC on Judkins' Record-Breaking Night, 114-49

Dixie State Head Coach Jon Judkins became the all-time winningest head coach in Utah collegiate basketball history with career victory No. 583 on Wednesday night as his Trailblazers routed SAGU American Indian College, 114-49, inside the Burns Arena.

Judkins (583-279), who also won his 299th game at Dixie State on Wednesday night, moved past legendary Utah head women's basketball coach Elaine Elliott (582-324) atop the state's all-time coaching victories list (men's and women's).

Four nights after knocking down a school record 16 3-pointers in a win over Denver last Saturday, the Trailblazers (6-5) shattered that mark with 21 more 3-pointers against the Warriors. DSU hit a record 10 first half treys, with six of those trifectas coming in a decisive 32-6 run that turned a slim 10-9 lead into a commanding 42-15 advantage with 5:14 play in the first half.judkinslrcelebration

Dixie State followed that up with a second-half record 11 more 3-pointers in the second stanza as the Blazers outscored the Warriors by a 67-26 count to coast to their fifth-straight win and give their mentor his record-breaking result.

"There have been some great coaches and a lot of people I have looked up as well in the history of college basketball in this state," Coach Judkins said. "When you get into coaching you really don't think of that kind of stuff, you just think of getting better every day.

judkinsgraphic"These wins mean a lot to me and they're going to mean a lot more to me after I retire," Judkins added. "But I know it's not all me, it's our players who put in the hard work every day, it's our coaches who I've been fortunate enough to have throughout my career. I've had some great coaches who have donated their time and efforts to help us recruit. Going from junior college to Division II and now Division I, it hasn't been the easiest thing, but I've had great help and great players to accomplish what I have."

DSU's 114 points are the second-most in the program's NCAA era (125 vs. Pacifica – 2012-13), while the 65-point margin of victory was the third-highest in the Blazers' four-year history.

In addition to the record 21 made 3-pointers, DSU hoisted up a record 37 3-point attempts and finished the game 21-of-37 (.568 – sixth highest percentage in DSU's NCAA era) from beyond the arc.

Meanwhile, a record 11 different Trailblazers made at least one trey, led by sophomore Frank Staine, who became the first player in the program's NCAA era to hit his first five 3-point attempts (5-of-5 overall) on his way to a 15-point night. Staine's five made threes (#8 all-time) were one off of DSU's NCAA-era school record of six set by six different players.

In all, four Blazers scored in double figures, with reigning WAC Player of the Week Cameron Gooden leading the way with a game-high 16 points to go with four assists. Hunter Schofield added 15 points with seven rebounds, and Jamaal Barnes poured in a career-high 11 points off the bench.

Dixie State wound up shooting 51.9 percent (42-of-81) from the floor, rebounding from a 38.6 percent clip (17-of-44) first half with a blistering 67.6 percent effort (25-of-37) in the second 20 minutes. The Blazers' 81 total shot attempts just missed tying the school record of 82 set during the 2016-17 season (vs Central Washington), while their 42 made field goals tied for fourth-most in the program's four-year era.

DSU also tied a season-high with 59 rebounds as the Blazers outrebounded the Warriors, 59-33, with freshman Trey Edmonds pulling down a game and career-high eight rebounds to go with a career-best eight points.

Ryan Davis led the Warriors with 11 points. SAGU-IAC hit on 18-of-63 (.286) from the field, including a 9-of-34 (.265) clip from beyond the arc.

After going 5-1 during its six-game, Dixie State will close out its 2021-22 non-conference slate with two road games, beginning with a date at North Dakota this Saturday afternoon. Tip-off is scheduled for 12 noon (MT) in Grand Forks.
