Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | DSU Athletic Media Relations

Trailblazers Stopped by Weber State Saturday Night

Dixie State could not overcome 12 second half turnovers and a hot-shooting Weber State side as the Trailblazers dropped their fourth-straight game, 87-70, on Saturday night inside the Burns Arena.

In the first-ever NCAA era meeting between the two in-state foes, the Trailblazers (1-5) and Wildcats treated the Burns Arena fans with a back-and-forth, and entertaining, first half that saw five ties and eight lead changes.

After Weber State (6-0) jumped out to a quick 11-7 lead, DSU rattled off a 12-5 spurt to take 19-16 lead just nine minutes in. The Blazer bench sparked the run, accounting for 10 of the 12 points, including a pair of Noa Gonsalves baskets and 3-pointers from Jacob Nicolds and Trevon Allfrey.

The Wildcats wrestled the lead right back after a Seikou Sisoho Jawara trey, and would match their biggest lead when a Zahir Porter perimeter jumper gave Weber 30-26 cushion with 6:17 left in the period.

Dixie State countered with a 9-3 run over the next two minutes, thanks in part to seven Dancell Leter points, to take its final lead of the night at 35-33 at the 4:16 mark. DSU would not score the rest of the frame as Weber State closed the half with eight-unanswered points en route to a 41-35 halftime edge.

Weber State continued its runs to open the second half as the Wildcats outscored DSU 18-6 over a combined 10-plus minute span to extend to a 51-41 cushion with 14:12 remaining.

Hunter Schofield ended the drought with back-to-back buckets, which spurred on an 11-6 stretch that made it a two-possession game at 57-52 after an Allfrey lay-in with just under 12 minutes to go.

That would be as close as DSU would get as Weber State broke the game open with a decisive 15-4 run over the next three-plus minutes to lead 72-56 with 8:08 to play. The Wildcats never saw their lead dip below 12 points the rest of the way to keep their undefeated start intact.

Leter finished with a career-high 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting and pulled down a career-best eight rebounds. Schofield was the only other Blazer to score in double figures as he poured in 11 points, though the senior was held to just four points after he accounted for DSU's first seven points of the night.

Dixie State shot 46.9 percent (30-of-64) from the floor, which included an even 50.0 clip (15-of-30) after halftime. DSU scored a season-high 44 points in the paint, to go with seven made 3-pointers (7-of-21, .333), but the Blazers only went to the foul line a season-low six times (3-of-6, .500).

DSU did outrebound Weber by a 34-30 count, which marked the first time this season the Blazers won the rebounding battle. Dixie State wound up with 18 turnovers in the game, which led to 25 Wildcat points, with 16 of those points coming after halftime.

Sisoho Jawara led five Wildcats in double figures with a game-high 23 points, including 14 in the second half. Weber State connected on 56.7 percent (34-of-60) of its shots with nine 3-pointers (9-of-20, .455), and went 10-of-13 (.769) at the charity stripe.

Dixie State continues its homestand with a rare two-game, non-conference series vs. Bethesda University next Tuesday (Nov. 30) and Wednesday (Dec. 1). Tip-off inside the Burns Arena each night is slated for 7 p.m.
