Trailblazers Sweep Split Twin Bill at Cal State LA on Saturday

Dixie State came away with a sweep of a split doubleheader on a marathon Saturday at Cal State LA's Reeder Field. The Trailblazers opened the day with a 13-4 victory over Northwest Nazarene, before rolling to a 9-3 triumph over the host Golden Eagles in the nightcap.

In the opener against NNU, the Trailblazers took advantage of a pair of two-out Nighthawk errors to jump out to a quick 2-0 lead through two innings. Lane Pritchard tacked on another run with one out in the third with his first home run of the season, before Dixie State erupted for five runs in the fourth to extend to an 8-0 advantage.

Tanner Harper led off the frame with first homer of the season, which was followed one batter later by a Tyson Fisher solo blast over the wall in left center. Braden Stutzman then singled, advanced all the way to third on an NNU outfield error, and scored on an Alec Flemetakis bunt single. Pritchard followed with a bunt single that moved Flemetakis to third, who later scored on a balk. Jake Engel would cap the rally with an single to left field to plate Pritchard as DSU rapped out seven hits and sent 10 batters to the plate in the stanza.

NNU (1-3) pushed across single runs in the home fourth and fifth innings, but Dixie State got one of those runs back in the sixth before striking for three more runs in the seventh to put the game out of reach. DSU scored those three runs on a wild pitch and two bases-loaded walks (five total walks in the innings), while the lone hit came off Fisher's bat to lead off the frame.

While the offense was having its way at the plate, the duo of Haiden Hendricks (W, 1-0) and Preston Hannay combined to limit NNU to just two runs and six hits through eight innings. Hendricks struck out two and scattered two runs and four hits over his five innings of work. Meanwhile, Hannay fanned four and surrendered only two hits in three scoreless innings of release.

Stutzman went 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored to pace the Blazer offense, while Engel and Harper finished two hits and two RBI apiece. Pritchard and Fisher also tallied two hits as 10 different Blazer batters collected base hits in the game.

In the nightcap vs. CSULA, Dixie State (6-0) ambushed the Golden Eagles from the get-go as five of the first six Blazers reached via base hit to start the game. Pritchard got the hit parade going with a lead-off home run, his second of the day overall, as he drove a 3-2 pitch over the wall in right center to put DSU on the board.

Engel followed with an infield single and would scamper home on a Cade Spurlin triple one batter later. Spurlin, who also tripled earlier in the day vs. NNU, scored on a Tyler Hollow single two batters later, then Hollow crossed home plate on a Stutzman hit as DSU pounded out six safeties in the inning overall.

DSU struck for another big inning in the fourth, this time plating five runs on five hits to extend to a commanding 9-0 advantage. Junior lefthander Jack Gonzales (ND) made those early runs stand as he limited CSULA (1-2) to just three hits over his first four innings.

However Gonzales would not figure into the decision as he was lifted after facing one batter in the fifth. The Golden Eagles spoiled the shutout later that inning as they cashed in four fifth-inning walks for two runs.

That would be it for CSULA at the plate as five Blazer relievers combined to limit the Golden Eagles to just three hits and one unearned run over the final four-plus innings of play to close out the win.

Every Trailblazer recorded at least one hit as Dixie State finished with 17 hits for the game. Pritchard wound up going 4-for-6 with a pair of RBI and two runs scored, while Fisher finished with three hits and drove in one run.

DSU will close out its seven-game, season-opening road swing on Sunday against the Golden Eagles. First pitch is set for 9:30 a.m. (PT).
