Dixie State wrapped up its 2020 season-opening road swing with a perfect 7-0 record as the Trailblazers posted a decisive 15-2 victory at Cal State LA on Sunday at Reeder Field.
DSU led 5-1 through five innings, thanks in large part to three Golden Eagle (1-3) errors, two of which came in the opening frame as
Braden Stutzman reached on an infield miscue to lead off the game. Stutzman would later advance to third after errant pick-off attempt and scored the game's first run on a
Tanner Harper single.
The Trailblazers tacked on another run in the third with a
Tyler Hollow RBI-hit before striking for three more runs in the fifth to take a commanding 5-1 lead. With two on and two outs in the frame, Harper blooped a pop up into shallow right field, which got caught up in the wind and fell in front of three Golden Eagle defenders and was ruled an error.
Two runs would come home on the play, while Harper advanced to second. Hollow then stepped up and rapped a sharp single to center to score Harper and give DSU its four-run cushion.
The run support was more than enough for senior lefthander
Tevita Gerber (W, 2-0), who struck out four of the first six CSULA hitters he faced, and held the Eagles to just one run and two hits with six total punchouts in five innings of work.
Dixie State put the game away in the sixth with four more unearned runs as two more costly CSULA errors extended the inning. With runners on first and second with one out, Stutzman hit a sharp grounder to the Golden Eagle second baseman, but his flip throw pulled the shortstop off the bag and all runners were ruled safe.
Jake Engel was then hit by an 0-1 breaking ball to drive in the first run, which was followed by a
Cade Spurlin run-scoring flyout and Harper's second RBI-hit of the day. DSU's fourth run came one batter later as the throw back from the catcher to the mound was dropped by the CSULA pitcher, which allowed Engel to race home carrying DSU's ninth run (and seventh unearned run) of the day.
DSU tacked on three runs for good measure in the seventh, and used the long ball in the eighth to plate three more. Spurlin led off the stanza with a solo shot to right center, which was followed two batters later with a two-run blast by pinch hitter
Jake Schulz to virtually the same part of the park. For Schulz it was his first collegiate hit and RBI.
Dixie State finished with 14 hits on the day, with Engel and Hollow leading the way with three safeties and two RBI apiece, while four other Blazer hitters posted two-hit outings. In addition, seven different DSU hitters drove in runs and nine Trailblazers scored at least one run.
Dixie State will open its 2020 home schedule with an 11-game homestand, which starts this upcoming weekend with a four-game series against former Pacific West Conference rival No. 12/21 Azusa Pacific at Bruce Hurst Field on Feb. 13-15.
