Dixie State could not overcome an early first half deficit Thursday night as the Trailblazers were blanked at No. 14 Midwestern State, 2-0, in the 2019 season opener for both sides at MSU's Stang Park.
MSU (1-0-0) opened the scoring just 3:04 into the match when Carlos Flores tucked home a Dylan Burke feed to spot the Mustangs an early 1-0 lead. Midwestern State then struck nearly 15 minutes later on an Adam Conway goal to extend to a two-goal advantage.
Dixie State was held to just four first half chances, but managed to fire off four shots on frame in the second 45 minutes, though neither of the Blazers' chances found pay dirt. Freshman
Guglielmo Bianchi led DSU with four shots, one on goal, while
Matt Lockwood was credited with two attempts (1 SOG), as DSU was outshot 19-10 (10-5 SOG) in the match. Senior netminder
Zach Nielson was credited with eight saves in his first start of the year, which moved him into second place on DSU's career saves list with 140.
Dixie State will close its two-match Texas trip Saturday night at Dallas Baptist.
