Dixie State pushed its winning streak to seven-straight, but it was not easy as the Trailblazers escaped with a five-set victory at Western Colorado Friday night at Paul Wright Gym.
The Trailblazers (8-3/3-0 RMAC) led wire-to-wire in taking the opening set, 25-17, but the Mountaineers (6-6/2-2 RMAC) countered with a pair of 25-23 set wins to jump out to a 2-1 lead in the match. DSU battled back to square the match at 2-2 thanks to a 9-3 spurt that turned an 11-11 tie into a 20-14 Blazer lead and an eventual 25-17 triumph.
Playing in their first five-set match of the season, the Blazers rallied from an early 6-1 deficit to take a 7-6 lead. WCU regained the lead at 11-9, but Dixie State managed to take advantage of four costly Mountaineer errors, coupled with a
Sai Collins kill, to draw even at 13-13. DSU's defense then forced two more WCU errors, including a big Collins solo block on match point that completed the come-from-behind win.
Lauren Gammell led four Trailblazers in double figures in kills with a season-high 15 along with one block, while Collins tallied career-highs of 14 kills and eight total blocks (three solo).
To'a Faleao posted her third double-double of the year with 12 kills and 22 digs, and
Lizzy Clark collected 10 kills and a career-best eight total blocks (four solo). In addition,
Jordyn Nelson dished out a career-high 50 assists to go with 15 digs for her third double-double of the season.
Dixie State continues its road swing Saturday afternoon with an RMAC showdown at Colorado Mesa beginning at 4 p.m.
