Trailblazers Drop OT Thriller to No. 17 Eastern New Mexico Friday, 2-1

Dixie State found Friday the 13th to be very unlucky as the Trailblazers dropped a 2-1 overtime thriller to No. 17 Eastern New Mexico inside Trailblazer Stadium.

DSU found itself in an early hole against the ranked Greyhounds (3-0-0) when Charlie Hackshall played a ball from midfield ahead to Joe Conway, who finished the breakaway chance with a top-shelf blast to give his side a 1-0 advantage.

The Blazers (1-2-0), who were held to just three shot attempts in the opening half, forced the issue offensively in the second 45 minutes and it paid immediate dividends as DSU netted the equalizer just 2:42 after halftime. Moises Medina secured a loose ball and sprinted to the middle of the EMNU 18-yard box, where he then chipped a pass to Enrique Bucio, who rocketed a shot into the lower left corner of the Greyhound goal to knot the score at 1-1.

Dixie State kept up the pressure as Medina had a look at a possible go-ahead score in the 53rd-minute, while Daniel Brubaker flicked a point-blank header at the Greyhound net nearly six minutes later, but ENMU keeper Ross Dalton stopped both chances to keep the match deadlocked.

Then late in the 67th-minute, Matt Lockwood blasted a shot that bounced off of diving Dalton to Medina, whose rebound chance went just wide. In all, Dixie State attempted nine second half shots, but could only manage just the one goal as the match went into overtime.

In the opening moments of the first OT period, the Greyhounds advanced the ball deep into the Blazer zone, where Gabriel Peres sent a cross in front of the Blazer goal. Two Trailblazer defenders slid to break up the pass, but unfortunately the ball caromed directly into the net for an own goal and ENMU escaped with the win.

Dixie State wound up outshooting ENMU 12-11, though the Greyhounds held a 9-6 edge in shots on goal. Senior goalkeeper Zach Nielson was credited with seven saves defensively for DSU.

Dixie State continues its homestand this Sunday with a match-up against Texas A&M-International at 1:30 p.m.
