No. 17 Softball sweeps Day 2 at the Courtyard Classic

No. 17 Dixie State softball swept its way to two victories Friday on Day Two of the 2019 Courtyard Classic at the Canyons Softball Complex in St. George.

The Trailblazers (3-0) opened the day with nail-biting 2-1 win in eight innings over Montana State Billings, before rolling to a 17-3 win over Cal State East Bay in five innings in the nightcap.

GAME ONE – Dixie State 2, MSU Billings 1

MSU Billings took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, capitalizing on two batters hit by a pitch with a two-out RBI single.

Dixie State tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth when Kori Gahn smashed a home run over the left field fence. And then both team's defenses took over. Neither side managed a base runner until the bottom of the sixth inning when a MSUB batter reached on a walk. Cambrie Hazel struck out the next batter to end the sixth inning and remove the scoring threat.

Both teams went down quickly in the seventh inning, pushing the game to extra innings tied at 1-1. With the international tiebreaker in effect, Taylor Godfrey was placed on second to start the eighth inning.

Godfrey advanced to third when Malory Eldredge laid down a successful sacrifice. Two batters later, the Trailblazers took a 2-1 lead when Kasey Crawford laced a two-out single through the left side.

MSU Billings threatened in the bottom of the eighth, bunting the tiebreak runner to third, followed by a hit by pitch to place runners on the corners. Two batters later, center fielder Allie Hughes belted a ball to left field that seemed destined to fall in and possibly end the game. However, Eldredge had other plans, making a diving back-handed catch to end the game.

Neither team had a hitter manage more than one hit in the defensive battle, while Cambrie Hazel tossed a complete-game gem in her 2019 debut. Hazel allowed just two hits and recorded 11 strikeouts to earn her first win of the season.

GAME TWO – Dixie State 17, Cal State East Bay 3

Dixie State wasted no time building a lead against Cal State East Bay, scoring four runs on three hits in the bottom of the first. Eldredge recorded the highlight of the inning with a 2-RBI single to right center field.

The Trailblazers put the game out of reach in the second inning, exploding for 13 runs on 12 hits to build a 17-0 lead. Nine different DSU players recorded a hit in the frame, while the highlight of the inning came when Destiny Diaz blasted a grand slam for her first collegiate home run.

The Pioneers scored two runs in the third inning and another in the fourth, but would get no closer as DSU closed out the win in five innings.

Diaz posted a team-high 4 RBI with her grand slam, while Eldredge recorded a team-high three hits with 3 RBI. Carissa Burgess picked up the win in the pitcher's circle to improve to 2-0.

Dixie State will close the week on Saturday with games against Hawai'i Pacific (12:30 p.m.) and Western Washington (3 p.m.).
