Trailblazers split on final day at Courtyard Classic

No. 17 Dixie State softball played to a split of its final two games of the 2019 Courtyard Classic on Saturday at the Canyons Softball Complex in St. George.

The Trailblazers (4-1) opened the day with a tough 6-2 loss to former Pacific West Conference foe Hawai'i Pacific, before closing the day with a thrilling 10-7 win over Western Washington in nine innings.

GAME ONE – Hawai'i Pacific 6, Dixie State 2

Hawai'i Pacific scored in three of the first four innings of the game, building a 4-0 lead heading to the fifth inning.

Dixie State cut the lead to 4-1 in the top of the fifth when Kaitlyn Delange doubled down the right field line, then scored on an RBI-groundout.  The Trailblazers added another run when Jessica Gonzalez belted a solo home run to left field in the top of the sixth inning, but the Sharks answered both DSU runs to clinch the 6-2 win.

Brenna Cornwall recorded three hits and a RBI to lead DSU in game one, while Gonzalez and Delange added two hits each.

GAME TWO – Dixie State 10, Western Washington 7 (9 innings)

Dixie State jumped to a 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning, scoring three runs on three hits and one WWU error. After Cornwall and Gonzalez each singled, Mikaela Thomson tripled off the fence in left field to clear the bases. Thomson later scored on an error for the third run of the inning.

Western Washington trimmed the lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run home run down the left field line.

The Trailblazers answered with a home run of their own in the top of the fifth. After Cornwall drew a leadoff walk, Gonzalez blasted a two-run home run to center field for her second home run of the day to push the lead back to 5-2.

The Vikings countered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth and another run in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at 5-5 and force extra innings.

Both teams scored one run in the eighth inning, pushing the game into the ninth frame. Kori Gahn gave Dixie State a commanding 10-6 lead in the ninth with a two-out grand slam to left field.

WWU cut the lead to 10-7 in the bottom of the ninth and looked to extend the game further, but Taylor Godfrey ended the game with a laser to home plate to mow down a WWU base runner for the final out.

Gonzalez, Thomson, and Gahn each finished with two hits to lead DSU at the plate. Cambrie Hazel recorded eight strikeouts in the victory, while Carissa Burgess entered in the fifth inning and claimed the win to improve to 3-0.

The Trailblazers host Northwest Nazarene in a doubleheader on Monday at Karl Brooks Field. First pitch is set for Noon.
