Trailblazers roll to DH sweep of Northwest Nazarene

No. 17 Dixie State softball rolled to a doubleheader sweep of Northwest Nazarene on Monday at Karl Brooks Field.

The Trailblazers (6-1) rallied for a 6-4 win in game one, before cruising to a 13-1 victory to seal the sweep in game two.

GAME ONE –  Dixie State 6, Northwest Nazarene 4

Northwest Nazarene struck first in the top of the second, scoring two runs on two hits and one DSU error to build a 2-0 lead.

Dixie State responded with two runs on two hits of its own in the bottom of the third to tie the game at 2-2. Jessica Gonzalez drew a one-out walk to start things off, then moved to third when Kori Gahn singled to right field. Kirsten Quigley entered as a pinch runner, then stole second. Gonzalez and Quigley scored on the next play when Dani Bartholf singled up the middle.

The Nighthawks countered with two more runs on one hit in the top of the fourth to retake the lead at 4-2.

The Trailblazers cut the lead to 4-3 in the bottom of the fourth when Malory Eldredge doubled to left center, scoring Brenna Cornwall from first. Two innings later, DSU took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the sixth.

The sixth inning looked as if it would be over quickly, as the first two DSU batters were retired in order. Eldredge kept the inning alive with an infield single, then scored to tie the game at 4-4 when Gonzalez reached on a NNU throwing error. Two pitches later, Gahn belted her third home run of the year to left center field to give the Trailblazers a 6-4 lead. DSU then retired the Nighthawks in order in the top of the seventh the seal the victory.

Gahn, Eldrege, and Bartholf each finished the game with two hits, while Gahn and Eldredge posted 2 RBI each. Cambrie Hazel improved to 2-0 in the pitcher's circle, striking out two in a complete-game win.

GAME TWO – Dixie State 13, Northwest Nazarene 1

Dixie State wasted no time taking the lead in game two of the doubleheader, scoring four runs on four hits to build a 4-0 advantage. Kasey Crawford opened the frame with a leadoff bunt-single to third base, then scored when Eldredge singled up the middle. Two batters later, Mikaela Thomson doubled to right center, scoring Cornwall and Eldredge. Thomson later scored when Taylor Godfrey singled to center field.

The Trailblazers tacked on another run in the bottom of the second when Eldredge, who reached on a fielder's choice, scored before Gahn was tagged out in a rundown between first and second.

The Nighthawks got on the board in the top of the fourth using a double and triple in back-to-back at-bats to cut the lead to 5-1. But NNU would get no closer.

Dixie State broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth, scoring eight runs on seven hits and two NNU errors to push the lead to the final tally of 13-1. Six different Trailblazers posted a RBI in the frame, including a two-run double by Bartholf and a two-run single by Emma Sweet. Ashley Jones also posted her first collegiate hit with a RBI-single to center field.

Nine different DSU players recorded a hit in the win, led by three hits by Crawford and two hits each by Eldredge and Thomson. Carissa Burgess improved to 4-0 in the pitcher's circle, allowing just one hit while striking out two in the five-inning win.

The Trailblazers will host the Dixie State Classic this weekend with games against St. Edward's, Adelphi, and Western Oregon.
