Medina's Late Goal Lifts Trailblazers to RMAC Tourney Win Over Westminster Thursday, 1-0

Senior Moises Medina struck for his team-leading 10th goal and sixth game-winning goal of the season to help lift Dixie State to a dramatic 1-0 result over in-state rival Westminster College in the quarterfinal round of the 2019 RMAC Men's Soccer Tournament Thursday night at Trailblazer Stadium.

With the victory, DSU (11-7-1) will advance on to face top-seed No. 14 Colorado School of Mines in the RMAC semifinals Sunday afternoon at 2:30 p.m., on the Orediggers home pitch in Golden.

The two sides battled back and forth in a scoreless opening half, though both teams had chances to take early control. Sophomore Matt Lockwood took DSU's first shot, a header that was turned away just 4:14 into the match. Lockwood set up another good look 15 minutes later when he sent a perfect center ball to freshman John Joseph, who came flying in for a point-blank header that sailed high over the cross bar.

Westminster (10-7-2) had a pair of good looks in the waning moments of the frame as Brody Nelson got off a shot that was stopped by DSU keeper Zach Nielson, while Max Bingman had a header attempt carom off the near post with 30 seconds left in the period.

The match remained deadlocked through most of the second half, though the tide turned in favor of the Trailblazers with 14:35 to play in regulation time when Griffin midfielder Gavin Flitton drew his second yellow card of the match. The subsequent red card ejection would force Westminster to play a man down the rest of the way.

Dixie State immediately turned up the offensive pressure as the Blazers kept possession on the Westminster end and rattled off three shots and got one corner kick opportunity, but could not find the back of the net.

The Trailblazers finally got the break they needed in the 81st-minute when DSU drew a hard foul on a defensive challenge, which set the stage for Medina, who stepped up and rocketed a top-shelf free kick just inside the near post from 31-yards out to give Dixie State a one-goal lead with 7:45 remaining. For Medina, it was his record 33rd-career goal and 14th-career game-winning goal.

DSU would go on to limit Westminster to three off-target shots the rest of the way to extend its win streak to five-straight and clinch the program's first-ever postseason victory.

Dixie State outshot the Griffins 14-11 in the match, including a 5-4 edge on goal. Nielson made finished with four saves to earn his 32nd-career victory in goal and his 11th-career clean sheet.

In the other RMAC quarterfinal played on Thursday, No. 6 seed Fort Lewis stunned No. 3 seed Colorado Mesa in Grand Junction and will move on the play No. 2 seed Regis Sunday in Denver.

The two semifinal winners will then square off in the RMAC Championship match, which will be played next weekend (day and time TBA) on the home pitch of the highest remaining seed. The winner of that match earning the conference's automatic bid to the 2019 NCAA South Central Regionals, which will be held Nov. 22-24 (site TBA).
