Megan Treanor's fourth triple-double of the season, Dixie State advanced on to the semifinal round of the 2019 RMAC Volleyball Tournament with a 3-1 victory over CSU-Pueblo Tuesday night inside the DSU SAC. With the win, the third-seeded Trailblazers will face No. 2 seed MSU Denver this Friday night at 5 p.m. at the Regis Fieldhouse in Denver.
Dixie State also improved to 20-7 on the season, which marked the third time in the program's NCAA era that the Blazers have reached the 20-win plateau.
DSU jumped out to a two-set lead in the match thanks to a pair of 25-19 set wins. The Trailblazers broke open a tightly contested first set with a 10-4 run, then after spotting the ThunderWolves (14-14) a 12-7 lead in set two, Dixie State rattled off a 13-5 spurt to rally and held on to take a 2-0 match lead.
Dixie State was poised for the sweep late in the third frame as the Blazers owned a 20-17 advantage after a
To'a Faleao kill. However the ThunderWolves rallied with eight-straight points to break through with a 25-20 set victory.
The Trailblazers quickly wrestled the momentum right back to open the decisive fourth stanza, scoring 18 of the first 22 points to take a commanding 18-4 lead. CSU-P would mount one final charge, outscoring DSU 10-1 to make a 23-14 set, but the Blazers' lead proved to be too much as Dixie State managed to close out the match with a 25-15 set triumph.
Treanor hit .370 for the match and finished with 14 kills, 18 assists and 11 digs to pace the Trailblazers, while Faleao tallied 13 kills along with six digs and two total blocks (one solo).
Sydney Johnson added eight kills and hit .357, and
Lauren Gammell finished with seven kills with two blocks (one solo). In addition,
Jordyn Nelson recorded a career-high tying four aces and posted her 11
th double-double of the year with 20 assists and 10 digs.
Dixie State collected 50 kills and hit .244 on the night, including a .405 clip with 16 kills in the opening set, and tallied 11 service aces in the match. DSU's defense limited CSU-Pueblo to a .142 hitting percentage and forced 23 attack errors.
In the other three RMAC quarterfinal matches, top-seed Regis defeated No. 8 seed UCCS, 3-1, while second-seed MSU-Denver swept No. 7 Black Hills State, 3-0, and No. 4 seed Colorado School of Mines outlasted No. 5 seed Colorado Mesa, 3-2. Host Regis and Mines will meet in the second semifinal match on Friday at 7 p.m. The RMAC tournament championship match will be played this Saturday evening at 5 p.m.
