Trailblazers Handle Fort Lewis Saturday Night, 3-1

Dixie State stopped a two-match RMAC road skid with an impressive four-set win at Fort Lewis Saturday night inside Whalen Gymnasium.

After rolling to a 25-14 set win to open the match, the Trailblazers (9-5/4-2 RMAC) found themselves in a quick 10-3 hole to begin set two. DSU chipped away at the deficit and eventually took a 17-16 lead. Tied at 22-22 late in the frame, the Skyhawks (5-10/1-5 RMAC) scored three of the final four points to pull away and square the match at a set apiece with a 25-23 victory.

Dixie State came right back in set three, opening the frame with a 7-1 run en route to another 25-14 win, then closed out the match with a 25-18 triumph in the fourth and final frame to spoil the Skyhawks' Homecoming night.

For the fourth time in her storied career, senior middle blocker Lauren Gammell tied DSU's NCAA-era record for total blocks with 11, including three solo stops, to go with seven kills. Meanwhile, freshman Chayse Daugherty threw down a match and career-high 14 kills and hit .306 in the match, and junior Sai Collins added nine kills with six block assists. Jordyn Nelson also collected a career-high five kills along with 39 assists and six digs, and sophomore Miranda Ekblad tallied career-bests of four aces and six kills.

Dixie State hit .191 for the match, though the Blazer defense offset that number by holding the Skyhawks to a .000 hitting percentage, forcing 32 attack errors thanks to 15.0 total blocks along with 60 digs.

Dixie State returns to the DSU SAC for three-straight RMAC matches, beginning with a date against in-state rival Westminster College this Tuesday night at 6 p.m.
