Trailblazers Turn Away Colorado Mesa Saturday Night, 3-1

Lauren Gammell breaks two DSU's single-match blocking records in the Homecoming Weekend sweep

Senior Lauren Gammell broke Dixie State's single-match record for total blocks with 13 to help lead the Trailblazers to a big four-set win over Colorado Mesa on Homecoming Saturday night inside the DSU SAC.

Both teams came into the night tied for third place in the RMAC volleyball standings at 9-3 overall, and both sides each came away with a set victory to open the match. Dixie State (15-6/10-3 RMAC) led wire-to-wire to take the first frame, 25-22, before the Mavericks squared the match with a 25-21 result in set two.

The Trailblazers blitzed CMU (13-8/9-4 RMAC) to begin set three, scoring 12 of the first 15 points of the frame en route to a 25-16 triumph and a 2-1 lead in the match. DSU's defense then led the way in the final set as the Blazers broke an 11-11 tie with a match-clinching 14-2 run to close the match with a 25-13 win.

Gammell was part of six total blocks in the run as she teamed with To'a Faleao for three of those rejections and had two more with Sydney Johnson. Meanwhile, Faleao threw down three kills in the run, while Johnson collected two kills, and Megan Treanor, who also had a block with Gammell in the rally, closed the match with her ninth kill of the night.

Faleao hit .371 on the night and finished with a match-high 15 kills along with 10 digs and five total blocks. Johnson added 11 kills with four digs, three aces and three blocks, and Treanor collected six block assists with 14 assists to go with her nine kills. Jordyn Nelson notched her team-leading ninth double-double of the season with 27 assists and 12 digs, and Mykenna Nelson picked up a team-high 17 digs.

Twelve of Gammell's 13 total blocks were block assists (with one solo block), which also broke her own DSU single-match record, and she wound up with eight kills and three digs on the night. Her 13 blocks bested her previous school record total of 11 total blocks, which she had tallied earlier this season at Fort Lewis (10/5) and on two other occasions against CMU last season. The senior also had 11 blocks in a win over Regis last year, while former DSU player Mariesa Nielson first established the record with 11 blocks in the 2007 season vs. Hawai'i Pacific. Meanwhile, her 12 block assists broke her previous record of 11 set last season at CMU and again vs. Regis.

For Gammell, she now owns six program records outright as she DSU's single season and career record holder for both block assists (148 and 361, respectively) and total blocks (162 and 397, respectively).

DSU hit .279 on the night with 50 total kills to just 14 total attack errors, while the Blazer defense limited CMU to a .124 attack percentage thanks to 16.0 total team blocks and 61 digs. Camille Smith led CMU with 15 kills and Kasie Gilfert added 13.

Dixie State wraps up its final homestand of the 2019 regular season next weekend with matches against New Mexico Highlands on Friday, Nov. 1, followed by a match vs. CSU-Pueblo on Senior Night Saturday, Nov. 2. Both matches are slated to start at 6 p.m., inside the DSU SAC.
