Dixie State opened its final long homestand of the 2019 regular season on a strong note as the Trailblazers posted a convincing 3-1 victory over Western Colorado Friday night inside the DSU SAC.
DSU (14-6/9-3 RMAC) led wire-to-wire in jumping out to a quick 2-0 lead in the match, taking the first set by a 25-15 count before rolling to a 25-9 win in set two. The Trailblazers opened the match with an 11-2 run and led 20-6 before settling for the 10-point win the first frame, then scored 13 of the first 15 points in the second frame to coast to the commanding match lead.
Western (8-12/4-8 RMAC) would extend the match to a fourth set with a 25-17 triumph in third stanza and scored the first three points of the fourth set. However Dixie State answered with 11-straight points, including three-straight service aces from
To'a Faleao, as part of a decisive 20-4 run and the Blazers cruised home from there for the 25-11 match-clinching win.
Lauren Gammell just missed a double-double as she finished with a match-highs of 11 kills with a .625 attack percentage and eight block assists.
Megan Treanor added 10 kills with eight assists, five digs and four block assists. Faleao finished with a school record seven aces to go with nine kills and seven digs, and
Sydney Johnson tallied nine kills and a career-high six block assists.
DSU hit an even .300 for the match with 46 total kills and 12 aces, while the DSU defense held Western to an opponent season-lows of 20 kills and an -.065 attack percentage, with 10 of those 20 Mountaineer kills coming in its set-three win.
