Trailblazers drop exhibition matchup at BYU, 83-56

Dixie State women's basketball opened its 2018-19 exhibition schedule with an 83-56 loss to Brigham Young University on Tuesday inside the Marriott Center in Provo, Utah.

The Trailblazers jumped out to a 4-0 lead early in the first quarter when Mariah Martin sank a pair of free throws, then buried a deep jumper just inside the 3-point arc. BYU responded with a jumper to cut the lead to 4-2, but Keslee Stevenson countered with a trey to give DSU its game-high lead of 7-2 at the 7:20 mark.

The Cougars answered with an 8-0 run to build a 10-7 lead midway through the frame. The teams traded baskets over the final five minutes, and BYU took a 21-14 advantage to the second quarter.

Dixie State cut the lead to 25-21 early in the second frame when Cameron Mooney connected on a jumper in the paint, but the Cougars closed the quarter on a 17-8 run to take a 42-29 halftime lead.

BYU seized control over the final two quarters, outscoring the Trailblazers 41-27 in the second half to push the score to the final tally of 83-56.

Dixie State shot 37 percent (19-of-51) from the field, 76 percent (13-of-17) from the free-throw line, and 24 percent (5-of-21) from beyond the arc. London Pavlica led two Trailblazers in double figures with 13 points in her DSU debut. Pavlica connected on 4-of-6 shots overall and converted 3-of-4 3-point attempts. Rashel Blazzard added 11 points and three rebounds.

The Trailblazers officially open the 2018-19 season on Saturday, hosting Northern New Mexico College inside the Burns Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
