Trailblazers edge Colorado Mesa Friday, 4-3

Dixie State wins four of six singles matches to rally for the victory

The Dixie State women's tennis team opened its Colorado trip, and its 2018-19 season, with a 4-3 victory on Friday over Colorado Mesa in Grand Junction.

The Trailblazers (1-0) claimed a victory at No. 2 doubles as Kyra Harames (Spokane, Wash./Central Valley) and Megan Lynch (Albuquerque, N.M./New Mexico Military Institute) earned an 8-2 triumph, but Dixie State would still head to singles play trailing 1-0 as the teams decided to play by Division I scoring rules. The Mavericks won the remaining two doubles matches to claim the doubles point.    

Dixie State rallied during singles play, claiming victories in four of the six matches to clinch the victory. Megan Lynch (Albuquerque, N.M./New Mexico Military Institute) set the tone with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles, while Hattie Erekson (St. George, Utah/Pine View) rolled to a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles. Kyra Harames (Spokane, Wash./Central Valley) gave DSU a 3-1 lead in the match with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles. CMU tallied victories at the No. 5 and No. 1 singles spots to pull even in the match at 3-3, and the match came down to the No. 3 singles match.

Isabel Heras (Saipan/Marianas) cruised to a 6-0 win in the first set of the No. 3 match, but fell 7-6 in the second set. Heras and CMU's Rebecca Osterberg battled back and forth in the third set before Heras claimed a 7-6 win to claim the win for the Trailblazers.

Dixie State wraps up its time in Colorado on Saturday with a 1 p.m. matchup against Colorado College.
